| Unqualified answer: No. Qualified answer: with an awful lot of work, you can restore most transaction data by doing QIF exports of every account from the archive, deleting the overlap from each QIF file by hand, and then importing the lot of them. This is just one of the reasons I do not archive and recommend that others abstain as well. | Thanks, guys, for the advice not to archive. I followed your instructions regarding restoring the backup file and I'm in business again. I also purchased Money 2006 ( still waiting for Money 4000!!!). Thanks for the assistance. Richard |

| My very strong advice is do not archive. Ever. You are not cleaning up your register - by archiving you are removing valuable data from your current file. There is no speed improvement or significant file size reduction from archiving. And, as you have noticed, many/most transactions are not even removed from your register by archiving. Archiving is utterly useless at best and harmful to your ability to obtain useful long term reports and searches. I have complete data in my current Money file back to 1983 and partial data back into the 1970s and wish I had a lot more. I can find any old transaction I need and run long term reports which come in very handy once in a while. Long term reports are also essential for accurate budgeting. And how are you going to answer simple questions like - When did we buy that vacuum cleaner and how much was it way back then? - if you archive your old data? Do you really want to have to open old archived files to look stuff up? A significant advantage of a program like Money is that you can have your entire financial life at your fingertips in one convenient place. Just make sure you have plenty of backups on different media. So my answer is don't delete anything and don't archive. Restore your complete unarchived file, make that your current working file and when you have that backed up, delete all the archive files and forget them. -- Regards, Bill Wood Fountain Hills, AZ "Richard Reynolds" <reyn1533[at]bellsouth.net> wrote in message news:cGJOf.1190$k6.820[at]bignews8.bellsouth.net... - quote - > I am using MS Money 4000 Deluxe. You don't. The conclusion of most contributors to this forum is that> registers that go back to 2000. > I tried to archive transactions before 1 Dec. 2005 using the Archive > function. I completed the boxes regarding dates and which accounts I > wanted to archive. Money created the archive file but all the transactions > back to 2000 are still listed in my account transaction files. > How do I delete all the archived transactions from those registers? archiving is pointless. It doesn't improve speed or significantly reduce file size. It does reduce your ability to review historical transactions. Maybe Microsoft will improve the archive function by version 4000. I assume you're using 2004. That assumption does not change the answer. If you have a backup from before you did the archive, I suggest you consider restoring. -- Chris Cowles Gainesville, FL |

| I am using MS Money 4000 Deluxe. I have transactions in my checking registers that go back to 2000. I tried to archive transactions before 1 Dec. 2005 using the Archive function. I completed the boxes regarding dates and which accounts I wanted to archive. Money created the archive file but all the transactions back to 2000 are still listed in my account transaction files. How do I delete all the archived transactions from those registers? |
