| These underscores can appear in categories that was imported into Money from Managing Your Money (either directly or via Quicken) many years ago. -- Michael Gordon MVP "dswann" <dswann[at]discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:A2878A50-685F-4A3A-A340-3DD497F328D5[at]microsoft.com... - quote - > I have reset the date to last year for this report. Here? Do you mean the "tax-related transaction report"? If so, try> show up here either. resetting the report. | Is there a list published anywhere that gives the default Money categories? Thinking back, this Money file originated from a converted Quicken file and these category names may have been imported from Quicken. | Sorry, but the dividends entered into an investment account register do not show up here either. The only place they show up is in the Investment Transactions report in the Investment area of reports. I still don't see why they don't show up in the tax-related reports as this income is certainly taxable. Isn't the whole idea of any tax related report is to show all of the taxable items in one report and to not have to run several reports to catch all of the data? Assuming you are talking about what I think you are talking about,> the first category choices (both income and expense)? And why are the so > cryptic? Are they left over from earlier versions that had DOS limitations? then whoever created those categories put that underscore there. They are not default categories. By putting the underscore, they alphabetize first in the lists. You can rename categories as you like. |

| I have reset the date to last year for this report. I don't think I communicated my issue very well. In a Money brokerage account, there is an "investment" register and a "cash" register. I have stocks that pay dividends that are entered in the investment register. For each entry, you choose an activity such as "sell", "buy", "add shares", etc. One of the choices is "dividend", which is for when either you are mailed a check or if the brokerage deposits the check into the brokerage cash account. The other choice is "reinvest dividend" for the case when the dividend is used to purchase additional shares. If "dividend" is chosen for the activity, then the transaction entry box has a "transfer to" box to choose where the money goes. If "reinvest dividend" is chosen, then you get to input entries for the # of shares and price for the purchase. In both cases there is not an opportunity to chose a "category" for the transaction. The Tax Category Manager does not list investment "activities" as choices for tax lines. It seems that the tax report is looking at categories, not investment activities. However, the portfolio manager correctly shows these two types of dividend entries as income. I agree that it is best to use 1099's for actual tax return, but like you, I use the Money reports for sanity checks and tax estimating. I do not export to tax programs, but do like to use the tax reports as a check. A separate question:, what is the significance of the underscore in front of the first category choices (both income and expense)? And why are the so cryptic? Are they left over from earlier versions that had DOS limitations? Thanks "Cal Learner-- MVP" wrote: - quote - > In microsoft.public.money, dswann wrote: > > How do I get the "Tax Related Transactions" report and the "Tax Software > > Report" to list dividends and reinvested dividends that are entered as an > > activity in an investment account? Consider resetting the reports. Set the date to cover last year.> Report" to list dividends and reinvested dividends that are entered as an > activity in an investment account? The only dividends listed in these reports > are a couple of incorrect entries I made where I entered the transaction > directly into a bank account and chose "dividend" for the category. It seems > like the program does not recognize the investment activity of "dividend" or > "reinvested dividend" as income. Make sure the accounts are not listed as retirement or tax-deferred. Also, Money will export tax information to a tax program. That is very useful for schedule D. It should be very useful for schedule C and E (you can have more). If you are using schedule F, say so. For schedule A and B info, I would rather use the 1099s myself, but use Money for sanity checking and estimating in those area. You choose which data you export to TXF for the schedules: M04:Taxes-> ExportToTaxCut (even to export to TurboTax) M05:Taxes-> TaxTools-> ExportToTaxSoftware You determine which categories get fed to that TXF for the selected forms: See the Tax Category Manager M04:Taxes-> TaxLineManager-> TaxCategoryManager M05:Taxes-> TaxTools-> TaxLineManager-> GoToTaxCategoryManager There you can determine which categories go to tax lines, and which line they go to. You can change things. |

| How do I get the "Tax Related Transactions" report and the "Tax Software Report" to list dividends and reinvested dividends that are entered as an activity in an investment account? The only dividends listed in these reports are a couple of incorrect entries I made where I entered the transaction directly into a bank account and chose "dividend" for the category. It seems like the program does not recognize the investment activity of "dividend" or "reinvested dividend" as income. |
