| Thank you so much Cal. Using your suggestion, I was able to open and hack the OFX file. It was pretty easy to figure out. It still will usually be easier to manually enter the data from my statements, but its good to know I can get the download to work. I will use it periodically to reconcile my entries. -- Peace, BobJ PS: I now realize that you recently provided the same information about opening the ofx file to another poster. I understand that it must be frustrating to repeat the same info so frequently. I apologize for my lack of attention. Start-> Settings-> ControlPanel-> FolderOptions-> FileTypes Select OFX-- Open Financial Exchange File . Click Advanced. Check Confirm Open After Download. This produce a pop-up box that will allow you to specify where the file goes first. Do your munging, and File-> Import. I believe that it is possible, but complex, to automatically feed the incoming file to a program that then feeds the munged result on to Money. Writing such a program would be a time-consuming challenge. I have experimented with that as a proof of concept, but I don't suggest it as a time saver. |

| Money 2006 Standard. In the past, I have manually entered the data from my Merrill Lynch brokerage account, but I decided to try to download and import the data instead. However, I discovered a major problem downloading data from their web page. I have a Nuveen NY Municipal Fund investment which is a tax free Mutual Fund. Merrill Lynch, in its infinite wisdom, however, had decided to classify it as a Stock in their download file. So when I try to import the data from the download, Money only gives me Stock choices from my Money file to match the downloaded fund with. Those stock choices, of course, do not include the Nuveen fund, as Money has it set up as a Mutual Fund. Despite the fact that Money has almost 200 transactions for the fund going back to 1993 (yes, I entered my previous history of that fund manually into Money), I would have been willing to go through the process to convert it in Money to a stock. However, in Money, items classified as stock cannot recognize certain transactions that occur in mutual funds, such as Capital Gains distributions, so that workaround does not work. I thought that I might experiment with making changes to the .ofx file, but I can't seem to find it. After download the file, I am asked whether I wish to open Money to import the data. If I say "No" and then to a search for *.ofx on my computer, it gets 0 results. But it must be somewhere, because when I do open MSMoney, I get a box that says I have a download from Merrill Lynch and do I want to import it? Merrill Lynch's only suggestion is to each time I download data, allow it to create the Nuveen Fund as a stock (duplicating my mutual fund listing) and then delete it. Then go and update the fund manually. Even this super kludge will not work unless I remove the ticker symbol from the existing fund. So I assume there really is no solution to this problem, but before I gave up, I thought if anyone here had any clever ideas I could try. -- Peace, BobJ |
