Thanks, Chris -
I thought I once did something similar to what I suggested, but I trust you
more than my middle-aged memory.

The payees would then be re-downloaded from the bank, as described by the
bank. That's cosmetically different from the name you may have given them,
(probably all upper case, for one) and you still have unique payees you
can't merge.

Couldn't one disable online services, them merge them, and then reenable
online services?

I suspect they're online payees. Correct? If so, you cannot merge them.

Cal - The rename feature is also greyed-out. The payee is Gottschalks. I
have two identical listings for Gottschalks, except that one contains
transactions from '96 to '02 and the other contains transactions from '02 on.

Odd. Make an extra copy/backup and then try Rename. *Carefully*
enter the name of the Payee you want to keep. You should get a
pop-up that you would answer Yes to.

Default Moving payees

I have two listings for the same payee. I cannot seem to combine them using
the "Move" feature, as it is greyed-out. Is there a work-around?
