You should create a subcategory for each vehicle / type expense. e.g. if> gas, maintenance, repairs, etc. I could use the standard > catagory:subcatagory of Automobile:Gasoline, Automobile:Maintenance, etc. > But by classifying them this way, doesn't tell me which vehicle the > expense > goes to. I have figured several options for a work around. 1st, I could > write in the memo field the vehicle the gas was put into, but then money > reports and budgeting would not like this. 2nd, I could create a catagory > for each vehicle and a subcatagory for each expense. you have a 2002 Toyota and a 2003 Ford you could have these subcategories: Auto: - Depreciation (once or twice a year, see how much your asset (i.e. the car) is worth, and take a depreciation expense to reduce car value from the asset account associated with the car) - Gas - 02 Toyota - Gas - 03 Ford - Maint - 02 Toyota - Maint - 03 Ford - Loan Interest (use for both cars, if you have a loan account set up) - Loan Principle (use of both cars, if you have a loan account set up) - Other (a catch all for whatever doesn't fit the above categories) You could also put auto insurance in this catagory as a subcategory. For me it makes more sense to have it in my insurance account. Get very confusing when - quote - > I want to set a budget of $5000 for gas a year for all the vehicles.
You need to budgget each vehicle.3rd, I - quote - > could somehow create classifcations, though I don't understand them very
Gasoline expenses are not the same as depreciation expenses of an asset.> well > and hear they are on the out. 4th, I could create an asset account for > each > vehicle, but when I enter transactions in them for $30 worth of gas, my > asset > account value would soon be zero for a vehicle that is still worth > something. - quote - > Any suggestions on the proper proceedure?

| And let me be clear about what classification does. Classification is just a separate labeling scheme just like Category. So, you categorize an expense as Automobile:Gasoline **and** separately classify it as Automobile:CR-V. This allows you to dice and slice the data readily into all Automobile:Gasoline expenses or all Automobile:CR-V expenses or any intersecting set (Automobile:Gasoline for just Automobile:CR-V). You can also do things like classify Insurance:Automobile or Taxes:License Plate Ad Valorem Tax to a specific vehicle. None of the suggestions to change categorization to be vehicle specific (Automobile CR-V:Gasoline or Automobile:CR-V Gasoline) allows this. And the schemes that change the category list grow the category list by a large number every time you change vehicles. | I've defined Classification1 as Class and have Class:Subclass like Automobile:CR-V, Automobile:TL, and Automobile:SL-K (not to mention things like Cell Phone 808)555-1212 and Vacation:Hawaii 2004) just for purposeslike this. | When you enter the category "Automobile - Gas" edit it by adding to the end as "Automobile - Gas Whatever" and Money 2006 will let you add a custom subcategory which could differenciate your different vehicles. |

You may be a candidate for the use of Classification-- an additional> gas, maintenance, repairs, etc. I could use the standard > catagory:subcatagory of Automobile:Gasoline, Automobile:Maintenance, etc. > But by classifying them this way, doesn't tell me which vehicle the expense > goes to. There have been some relevant postings in the group you should find useful. I suggest you go to http://groups.google.com/advanced_group_search to find recent postings on the subject. Enter "classification" into the words box, and microsoft.public.money into the Newsgroup box. Sort by Date usually. |

| I am at a loss. I have three vehicles which I would like to catagorize for gas, maintenance, repairs, etc. I could use the standard catagory:subcatagory of Automobile:Gasoline, Automobile:Maintenance, etc. But by classifying them this way, doesn't tell me which vehicle the expense goes to. I have figured several options for a work around. 1st, I could write in the memo field the vehicle the gas was put into, but then money reports and budgeting would not like this. 2nd, I could create a catagory for each vehicle and a subcatagory for each expense. Get very confusing when I want to set a budget of $5000 for gas a year for all the vehicles. 3rd, I could somehow create classifcations, though I don't understand them very well and hear they are on the out. 4th, I could create an asset account for each vehicle, but when I enter transactions in them for $30 worth of gas, my asset account value would soon be zero for a vehicle that is still worth something. Any suggestions on the proper proceedure? |
