As the dividends are recorded only once either way, how can there be a
difference?

I suggest you use the second feature Dick discusses. The first way deosn't
work properly. It will show that your income (dividends) for a given
investment is twice as high as it really is.

I use whichever of the two methods seems to most closely match the activity
posted by the bank. That varies by institution.

Correct. But check the activity names. I'm not sure I was exact. You will
see the ones you should use, though.

Let me be sure I'm clear on what you've said. Using "either" of the two
methods you cited will produce the correct results (ex: accurate gains in
dollars and percentages.) Thanks for your assistance.

The two transaction approach uses these investment activities:

Dividends Received / Buy
L Term Cap Gains Received / Buy
S Term Cap Gains Received / Buy

The following investment activities work as well but require only one
transaction:

Reinvest Dividends
Reinvest L Term Cap Gains
Reinvest S Term Cap Gains

Default help with dividends & cap. gains

I've read thru Money's Help files but still need some clarification on the
exact process for entering dividends and capital gains received and then
automatically reinvested. It seems to me that in order to accurately record
these transactions I need to enter two transactions for each distribution:
one that records the receipt and a second that records the reinvestment. Is
this correct?
