After several days of frustration, I found this post. Your advise did
resolve my problem - identical to lindygirl. You are also correct that
disabling Norton was not sufficient to get past the problem. I uninstalled
Norton Internet Security which took NAV with it and I was able to start Money
2006. I had to restore my 2005 backup, but am now back in business. I had
purchased Norton System Works 2006 at the same time I purchased Money 2006
(and Tax Cut), so reinstalling Norton was something I would have done
regardless.

Way too much of a coincidence. I suggest you
1. be behind a NAT router and/or run the Microsoft firewall.
2. Make sure your XP critical updates are up to date.
3. Then uninstall Norton (people have posted that "disabling" is not
sufficient.
4. Update Money.
5. Then reinstall Norton if you like. You could probably turn off
the Microsoft firewall, since it is not usually considered to be a
good idea to be running two software firewalls at the same time.

Yes, I have Norton Internet Security enabled. No, I am not running any beta
MS software. However, I was previously running an old version of MS Money.

Do you have Norton installed? Are you running beta Microsoft
software?

Default unending "checking updates" msg when opening trial version

I downloaded the Money 2006 Deluxe trial version, and upon opening the
software am getting the following pop-up msg: "Please wait while Money 2006
checks for software updates. This process could take several minutes."
Well, it's been about an hour and the software is still stuck in this loop.
When I try to end the program from the Windows Task Manager, it says it can't
end the program because the program is waiting on a response from me (FYI,
there are no buttons in the pop-up box with which to respond). I tried to
uninstall the program, but it said it would make my old Money files
unreadable. I also tried to contact Microsoft support, but cannot get help
until I have the Product Identification Number -- which I cannot access since
I can't successfully open the software. Help, please!
