Will now do the same for the other Money files I have. successfully opened the repaired file from the USB stick, I then forgot to save it onto the hard disk (yes, I know) and when I went back to Money, could no longer access the file. So - I went through the whole procedure again with no joy. I still got the message "Money is not properly installed". It then occurred to me that the only file I had previously transferred to the new Windows PC via the USB stick had been done via the Mac - I had copied the file onto the Mac, then dragged it onto the desktop and back into the Windows My Documents. I wondered whether there was some clue there. So, I copied the Money files from the USB stick to the Documents folder in the Mac (which obviously doesn't know what to do with them), then dragged them onto the desktop, then dragged them back from the desktop into My Documents in Windows. And it worked like a dream. The files are up and running, I have been able to connect to my bank, and I have no doubt wasted several days over a problem that I probably didn't have in the first place. I am very grateful for Bob's help, and am explaining this in some detail for anyone else who has the same problem and may find this in the archives. PS Bob, thanks for the link about backing up. i do back up regularly, usually every two days, but may make that more often in future. -- Sally in Shropshire, UK bed and breakfast near Ludlow: http://www.stonybrook-ludlow.co.uk Burne-Jones/William Morris window in Shropshire church: http://www.whitton-stmarys.org.uk |

It is the same software - I intend to get it running on the new PC, then remove it from the old. The only difference is that the version on the old PC was effectively an update from an earlier version (Money 99) and running under Windows 98SE, whereas the version on the new PC has been installed under Windows XP Pro where no earlier version of Money existed. I am just going to try your earlier suggestion of trying a file repair on a copy. -- Sally in Shropshire, UK bed and breakfast near Ludlow: http://www.stonybrook-ludlow.co.uk Burne-Jones/William Morris window in Shropshire church: http://www.whitton-stmarys.org.uk |

They both say version 12.0, but interestingly have different serial numbers, which reminds me that although I bought a full version of M04, I had an earlier version on the old PC when I installed it so effectively it was an upgrade. When I installed it on the new one, of course, it was a new installation. -- Sally in Shropshire, UK bed and breakfast near Ludlow: http://www.stonybrook-ludlow.co.uk Burne-Jones/William Morris window in Shropshire church: http://www.whitton-stmarys.org.uk |

| I have an old Windows 98SE PC running Money 2004, and have just bought a new Mac on which I have installed Virtual PC and Windows XP Professional. I have installed Money 2004 on the VPC with no problem, but I just cannot seem to move the My Money files over. Using the advice on the Microsoft Support site, I have copied the My Money.mny file onto a USB memory stick (and also two other separate .mny files I have). I then tried copying MyMoney.mny from the USB stick to the My Documents folder on the new VPC. The error message was "the parameter is incorrect". Then I tried creating a backup (MyMoney backup.mbf) and opening the new money and selecting "restore from backup". I then get the message that "Money is not properly installed". I then tried reinstalling by doing "Repair", but no difference. I have also tried opening Money and choosing File - Open and selecting the My Money file direct from the USB stick. I really don't know what I'm doing wrong and would be glad of some advice. I have looked at previous questions of this sort but none of them seem to have exactly my problem. -- Sally in Shropshire, UK bed and breakfast near Ludlow: http://www.stonybrook-ludlow.co.uk Burne-Jones/William Morris window in Shropshire church: http://www.whitton-stmarys.org.uk |
