| This issue is very frustrating as I ended up spending at least 15 hours to resolve it. I recall years ago using the budget features in Money (that was easy). Not to mention that the Money guys work in the same building as me ![]() Anyhow, I think I found a systematic way to elimate the budgeting error introduced by the 'phathom bills'. I have not seen this documented anywhere. Here is the trick (in Money 2006) 1. Goto BILLS 2. Hit the VIEW HISTORY (left pane) 3. Hit "Find and Replace wizard" 4. Perform a search on a troublesome category (ex. "federal") 5. Hit the "replace" button 6. Select replace 'category' 7. Type the new category name in the "with" field (ex. "taxes: FIT") (tip create the subcategory before, because this wizard does not allow to create subcategory on the fly) 8. OK everything 9. As needed, go back in the budget and delete the 'old' category (ex. Taxes:Federal) 10. Add Taxes:FIT to your budget Joel Lachance "Dmitry Korolyov [MVP]" wrote: - quote - > I am using advanced budget and advanced bills. A reference to the scheduled > deposit was in the budget. I have tried that in an attempt to practice what you described here on another occasion, related to preventing ghost transactions from affecting the budget. Not being able to set it to 0 remaining, I set it to 1. The downside of that is you cannot edit a single instance when there is only 1 payment remaining. You can edit the series (with only 1 remaining), but that affects historical transactions. I think the workaround I've arrived at is to edit the series so 2 remain, then editing both remaining instances to $0. Because more than 1 remains, it will allow you to edit individual instances. By editing them both (individually) to $0, you eliminate any future effects on the budget. It's dumb that it's necessary, but it's an infrequent event, and it works. -- Chris Cowles Gainesville, FL |

| Well, as annoying as Money can be, I must admit that I still love it. There is no software that is more importance or useful to me and I use it virtually every day and have been doing so for many years. So hunt for a better price and work with it for a while and I bet you will be quite satisfied. You might even consider older versions which are available on Amazon and eBay at quite low prices. I am still using Money 2002 and have no intention of using a newer version. I have downloaded each new version for a trial every year but I still like 2002 best. | Chris, By "you cannot do that in Money 2006" I assume that you are referring to typing 0 for the number of transactions remaining?? Money 2002 usually lets me use 0 but sometimes it replaces my 0 with 1. I simply re-enter 0 again (maybe 2-3 times) and eventually it accepts 0 and the old scheduled bill/deposit is gone forever ![]() If Money 2006 never accepts 0, I guess you would have to use 1 and simply enter a final dummy transaction in your register to complete the process and then delete the unnecessary transaction after the offending bill/deposit is gone? | Hopefully, I didn't pay anything. I am using trial version of Money 2006, still evaluating if I should or should not buy it and use it. The odds are turning mostly to "no". $75 is the price for Deluxe on the MS website... -- Dmitry Korolyov [d__k[at]removethispart.mail.ru] MVP: Windows Server - Directory Services "Chris Cowles" <spam_magnet[at]remove-me-bellsouth.net> wrote in message news:%23%23Phf2PJGHA.1132[at]TK2MSFTNGP10.phx.gbl... - quote - > "Dmitry Korolyov [MVP]" <d__k[at]removethispart.mail.ru> wrote in message > news:uiyFQXOJGHA.668[at]TK2MSFTNGP11.phx.gbl... > > So this is a 4-year old bug they can't fix? > > And they dare to sell that crap for $75??? > Where did you pay $75? | Ahhh. Just yesterday in the scheme of Money bugs. BTW, Money Deluxe is sub $19 at retail here in the states if you are a savvy shopper. Of that, Microsoft probably gets less than $10. And they have to put a CD in a box... | Here is a post I made back in December to another fellow who was having a similar problem. It might help you as well. Also there is another way to fix this having to do with deleting the category but I cannot remember where that method is explained. In any event I never delete scheduled bills or deposits anymore since it usually doesn't work: "Generally speaking it is dangerous to delete scheduled bills or deposits because they keep coming back to haunt you. This is a bug in Money 2002, which I use, and apparently it still exists in newer versions even though I reported the bug in 2002 and complained every year thereafter to MSFT. (I have never had a problem skipping a bill however.) The better method of getting rid of a scheduled bill/deposit is to use the "this series will end at some point in time" check box in the Edit dialog. Pick a date in the prior year to end the series if the bill goes back that far. I like to use 12/31/ of the prior year. Type 0 for Number of transactions remaining and conform the Next due date with the Date of final transaction. This method will get rid of old scheduled bills and you do not need file repair or export/import unless you have a very old file and lots of other problems." | I am using advanced budget and advanced bills. A reference to the scheduled deposit was in the budget. Now that this scheduled deposit was correctly deleted, the reference still remains in the budget. In other words, if I add the income category corresponding to the deleted deposit to the budget, an income entry gets created in the budget. Trying to edit its gets an interface window telling me to select which deposit I want to edit; the list contains and entry corresponding to the deleted deposit, selecting it and "ok" does nothing, i.e. goes nowhere. Deleting budget and creating new one from the scratch doesn't help. Repairing money file doesn't help. -- Dmitry Korolyov [d__k[at]removethispart.mail.ru] MVP: Windows Server - Directory Services |
