| The weird thing is that ALL of the data files were stored on a mapped drive, not on the computer that died . . .so it hard to imagine that all of them would then suddenly not work. I kept my master file and some backups on the mapped drive and backed up to a directory on the laptop that died. . .will check another hard drive . . . .to see if anything's there. Thanks for trying! You have now eliminated that as a cause of problems. You could have done that with the Money 2006 trial; it could convert earlier business files, but would not have the business features available. It would seem your files that you are using so far are actually corrupted. :-( If you have the old laptop that died, and if you have not reformatted etc, someone may be able to remove and search that hard drive for *.mny or *.mbf files. There are adaptors that will let a laptop drive connect to a desktop machine. I suggest you not try a file recovery program that writes to that drive. I suggest you don't do anything that writes to that drive. Think about any USB flash drives or CDs that you might have made an extra backup to. |

| Additional clues: I try to open either the mny file, an M12, or M14 file using Money 2006 Small Business, I get the following error message": Microsoft has exerpienced an internal error and has to restart" When I click for more information: AppName: msmoney.exe AppVer: 15.0.0.513 ModName: kernel32.dll ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180 Offset: 0001eb33 I then run a standard repair on the MNY file and I get prompted for a password. When I enter the correct password, a window tells me: "the utility could not repair your file. Repair a dfferent version of your file, restore a backup file, or re-install Money. You should also make sure your file is not saved as read-only(0x800a1462)" I click the log and it says "No broken records in the original file." This leades me to suspect this remains a password bug issue that is locking up my data file. I know I'm using the correct password because I had written it down and when I enter one I know to be incorrect, it simply prompts me for the correct password. But when I enter the right one, I get the above message saying the file couldn't be repaired, though the log says there are no broken records . .. . As background, I competely removed Money 2006,uninstalling the program, deleting the folders (moving my data files to the documents folder), deleting the money folder under documents & settings -> all users-> Microsoft. I then regedited and got rid of the money references there. I did a clean reboot and reinstall . . ..the above repair issues happens following the clean install. Any suggestions? | I went out and bought MS Money 2006 Small Business, hoping a new improved version might help resolve the issue. however, it crashes when I try to open the mny file and M12 and 14 backup files that were created using Money 2005 which was upgraded from 2003 (I don't believe I ever had 2004 . . .though do have the files with that 204 suffix.). Any suggestions? If you have a *.M12 file, that would indicate that you had a Money 2004 file that you converted, or attempted to convert. If you copy that file to Krista.mny, Money 2005 should be able to open and convert Krista.mny. If you want to open a *.mbf or a *.mny that is dated newer than the *.M12 file, I suggest you try the Money 2006 trial. |

| I've pretty much tried the workarounds and have hit the wall. I do the update of sample, but still get prompted for the phantom password when I attempt to open the mny file with all of my data. the same thing happens with the backup files. Any additional ideas? | Dick, Wouldn't it be less complicated to simply navigate to the Sample.mny file in Windows Explorer and double click on it. This should open Money with Sample.mny instead of the last (corrupt) file it tried to open without all the moving and renaming. -- Peace, BobJ "Dick Watson" <littlegreengecko[at]mind-enufalready-spring.com> wrote in message news:%23Z6Mj7%23GGHA.2012[at]TK2MSFTNGP14.phx.gbl... - quote - > Your data file is a .MNY file. | Your data file is a .MNY file. You should move it to somewhere in the My Documents folder if it isn't already there. You should generally stay out of the Money installation folder except maybe to open the Sample data file. The point of the step was what to do if Money starts and crashes because it's opening a most recent file it doesn't understand. In this case the user must do something to get Money up and running in order to update it. If it crashes upon opening, you can't get there unless you prevent it from opening the file it doesn't like anyway. Moving/renaming the file is how I'm suggesting doing this. Make more sense? | I thought I had resolved this issue previously, but it appears not. I had Money 2005 Small Business installed on a laptop that died. It had been upgraded, full install, from a Money 2003 Deluxe & Business version. I parked my data files on a mapped drive on another computer . . .previously I had XP professional on my laptop. Now I'm running XP Home. Upon reinstalling the software I get prompted for a password. When I enter what I know to be correct (because I'd written said password down), the file does not open. Neither trying the password nor checking the "I do not need to use online services" works. Next, I am prompted that either the file is read only (it is not), that Money cannot find the file (I have shown money where the file is) or that it cannot be opened (duh . . .the password bug!) So here's my situation. I have an mny file I cannot open because of the above mentioned issue. I attempted to install 2005 on my new laptop system running xp home. I let money update by opening Sample through My Explorer, and still when I attempt to open the mny file that contains my entire financial life, i get prompted for this apparent phantom password. So I fall back and punt. I see there are several *.M12 files witht he same file name as the mny one that I want to open. They apear to be of a fairly recent date - dec 2005 --, so I've attempted to open those. (Apparently *.M12 is a Money 2004 backup file. I don't have Money 2004 . . .I have 2003 from which I upgraded to 2005 . . .) When I attempt to restore the file through Money 2005 which is supposed to be backwards compatible, I get prompted to give the restored file a name, and then .. .drum roll ...I get prompted "sign into money" using the passport. If i cannot open the mny file or the backup files, I will have to re-enter by hand every transaction for multiple checking and credit card accounts . . ..not my idea of fun! I wonder whether I need to open the files from the place they'd been . . .(the mapped drive) or whether I can put them in a new directory. Anywhoo .. .neither way seems to work. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm on the verge of giving up and doing massive data entry by hand. Microsoft support through their chat feature online was useless, BTW, further wasting my time. The tech person was unaware of the issue and kept claiming my files were corrupted. Best, KB -- Krista |
