I had seen the update failure, but I wasn't worried, having seen these come
and go before.

Remember who's the customer PC Mag et al., like most: the advertisers. They
exist primarily to drag eyeballs to ads. They are just structurally unlikely
to print things that are a major slam to their customers. As to how to get
attention in the marketplace of ideas, it's a rare situation where any minor
player can make more noise than the advertising budget et al., of somebody
like Microsoft.

Thanks for the note.

Flash! I just tried updating again and "it worked;" that is, no error
message, and a check mark with date and time of update, as per last year.
Hm. Wonder what is going on.

Thanks Dick. And thanks for your support with Money in general. Like you I
have decided to stay with M04. Do you happen to know if everyone on M04
stopped getting Money Updates (at the turn of the year?)? If so, I would
presume that it is a policy thing, even if not announced.

As an aside, I find it disturbing that reviewers at places like PC Mag
never seem to delve deeper than the most superficial in reviewing software.
I wonder if a real review in such a widely read venue, which exposed, for
example, many of the issues features in the FAQ site, would make any
difference to the Money developers or other software venders.

I tried to capture thoughts on this at http://umpmfaq.info/faqdb.php?q=174.

Default M04 stopped updating--implications?

I am using Money 2004 Deluxe and it has stopped updating (the Money Updates,
not prices or financial institution downloads, which appear to be working).
I noticed that others have had this problem. I am not sure if it is fixable
by uninstalling and reinstalling, as the other posts aren't clear if this
works. Assuming that it doesn't; that is, that MS has decided not to
support M04 anymore (trying to get us to buy M06, I suppose), the only
implication that I can think of is that the tax table info will not update
"automatically." Rather we will have to enter any new tax table info
manually. I also wonder if we will be able to look at tax data by year for
years going forward. I took the advice of some folks on this forum back in
'04 and didn't upgrade to M05. I presume that that same advice holds for
upgrading from M04 to M06. For those staying with M04, what other issues
can we expect to encounter going forward--someone mentioned prices not
downloading in '07?
