Default Re: How to input "Keep the Change" transactions with Bank of Ameri

Glenn - I too am enrolled in the BoA "KTC" program. I just except the
transfer from checking to savings into Money. It such a small amount that I
decided it wasn't worth the effort of trying to track it.

BTW - They do not load the transactions daily. At least that's not been my
experience. I was told the transaction summary and transfer is dependent upon
how often you use the card.

I'm trying to decide if I want to stay on this program or not. Any advice,
advantages or disadvantages would be greatly appreciated.

There is a catch though!! Your Keep the Change Transfer from checking
to Savings takes a day. i.e BOFA gets to use your money for one day...

I like the idea that they match the difference 100% the first three months
and then 5% thereafter.

Really, it's a prompt to HAVE a savings account vs trying to track spendable
and savings money all in one checking account. That's been a mess and hasn't
worked.

The bank tranfers the difference on a daily basis as one cumulative
transaction from the day's spending. We use our Debit Cards alot.

Since I have $100/month budgeted for savings, I was wondering how to make
the transfer amount show as a Savings Expense and then let MS Money transfer
it to my Savings register as well, since I now have that account set up in
Money as well.

AS far as a challenge, Cal..this sure looks like one.

Anyone have the MS Money for Dummies book? LOL!

That complicate life a bit. Are they going to bill all of the round-up in a
once a month transaction? Then enter it in the debit card account as a
transfer transaction to the saving account all by itself.

How to budget? Schedule an estimated amount as a monthly transfer. How you'd
estimate this is a total mystery. I guess I'd figure the average number of
transactions per month times $0.50. (This assumes that the fractional
transaction amounts are evenly distributed between $0.00 and $0.99.)

This seems like a complicated way to save very little money unless you use
the debit card hundreds of times a month. As noted previously, this is
surely what they are hoping you will do. It's sad we can't collectively
negotiate cash discounts from the ultimate payees and cut these money
handling leaches out of the equation. BTW, if you are committed to using a
card, I'd say you are a lot better off using Discover and saving the 1%
cashback. Then it's their money--or the merchant's money, depending on how
you look at it--not yours.

What is your goal? If you want a simple solution, I suggest you
either abandon that program, or allocate the whole amount to the
main category.

If you want a challenge, carry on.

Well, had I read further on the BofA site...

Each transaction downloads in the original amount and BofA does a once-a-day
transfer of the cumulative amounts rounded up of each debit card transaction
to the savings account.

So, what's the best way to enter this transaction AND track my monthly
Savings budget in MS Money? I figure the $100 I budgeted per month for
Savings will accrue through the month for Keep the Change, or "KTC"

Help!

It's also a great way for them to get you to use your debit card. This is to
their advantage since it gives them the merchant discount from the
transaction that cash or somebody else's credit card or a check does not
give them.

Your proposed method looks suitable. You will need to account for their
match money as income somewhere.

Default How to input "Keep the Change" transactions with Bank of America

I just signed up for the BofA "Keep the Change" program and need to figure
out the easiest way to set this up in MS Money 2006 Deluxe.
This program rounds up my debit card transactions to the nearest dollar and
puts the difference in my savings account. They match 100% for the first 3
months, and then 5% thereafter

So...how do I do this?

My first thoughts are...

1. Create the Savings Account in MS Money--Doh!

2. When entering the transaction, I enter it as a SPLIT..for example..
A purchase of 99.01 at WalMart for FOOD would be split as:

Food: $99.01
Transfer : BofA Savings $0.99

Any other suggestions?

BTW, this is a great way to start saving a little at a time.
