Default Re: Invalid Pathname when upgrading

What was the My Money.MNY in My Documents you told Money to overwrite when
you were doing an M06 restore of the M05 backup file? I'm guessing it was
your M05 data file. That's where it would be, by default, and what it would
be named, by default.

IF you can burn a CD from an .ISO file and are still committed to restoring
the M05 backup file, you might get lucky with an install of M05/an Internet
Update of M05, a File|Restore--to the .MNY file format--then a reinstall of
M06 and File|Open. Reply by private email if interested in trying this
route. But you'd have to be able to burn a CD from a .ISO.

Cal's suggestion of using the .M14 file and your reply that you have such a
file is also interesting. Depending on where it came from--what's it
dated?--it could be either one left over from an M05 to an M05.1 upgrade or
it could be left over from a M06 upgrade you've forgotten about.

Copy that file to Russ06.mny, and open it with Money 2006.

Yes, but it is a file that doesn't have a program associated with it. The
Money logo doesn't appear on it when you are looking it up in the finder.

The only MNY file that I had was the sample from M06 and the trial version of
M05. You told me to copy my M05 MBF file to the desktop and I did that.
That is the only reason I used it. I guess I don't have a clean MNY file
from my original M05. I have a copy of M05 coming in the mail sometime this
week.

I'll try that I guess. I give up. I hope I don't have to start all over.
My taxes are going to be a &^%*$ this year without all the information from
Money.

Russ how many times do we have to tell you DO NOT mess with the mbf files.
They are really there for when you screw up on a change to your Money file
and need to go back to before the screw up.

As Dick has eloquently said the normal way to upgrade is to install the new
version of Money and let it lose on the .mny file.

Please stop messing with the MBF file it is confusing all our attempts to
help you.

Arrgghhhh.

If there is a My Money.MNY file in My Documents--and you just told Money to
overwrite it?!?!?!--why were we messing with the .MBF file?

Didn't we discuss this before in the thread? If you have the .MNY file, it's
far less troublesome to open/upgrade it than depending on restore/upgrade to
work.

I'm running completely out of ways to help. You may just have a bad backup.
That's why upgrading the .MNY file directly has been the strategy I've been
suggesting since my very first post in the original thread.

I suspect that it didn't want to restore into the C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Money folder for some form of permissions reason. Your user files should be
in your folder (My Documents) anyway.

I sure hope for your sake that you didn't just overwrite the only copy of
your M05 .MNY file you should be trying to open in M06 instead of all of
this messing with Backup/Restore. A *****much***** better choice would
probably have been to name it "My Money restored" or something.

I tried both diagnostic options that you described. I restored the copied
M06 SAMPLE file on my desktop and that worked (the sample info came right
up). Trying the next option I made a copy of my MBF file and pasted it to my
desktop. When I opened it from my desktop, I was asked to NAME THE RESTORED
FILE. By default it asked to put the file in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Money\My Money.mny. I didn't change that location and I received a Path Name
is Invalid Error.

When I select Browse and changed the location to My Documents and I select
the My Money file that already exists there it asks me if I want to replace
it? I say Yes and then click Restore. At that point it asks for my Sign In
Information (Passport Network Credentials). I enter that information and it
tells me it is coverting the file. After about 5 seconds I get a message
that Money Has Encountered a Problem - Send Error Report? When I send the
error report Money quits all together.

Default Re: Invalid Pathname when upgrading

So the external hard drive is on the same system it was on when the backup
was made and all that has changed is replacing the M05 trial with an M06? Do
you still have the M05 .MNY file anywhere? Trying to open it (File|Open)
with M06--M06 will then do a file version upgrade--would avoid any restore
or cross version restore issues. That is DEFINITELY the best and first
choice of how to do this.

Backup/Restore should be foolproof. It isn't. You are adding the
complication--that's "supposed" to work but if it did, you wouldn't be
here--of the cross version restore.

Assuming you don't still have the .MNY file, maybe we need to some
diagnostics. Try this:

1) copy the M06 sample file to your desktop
2) back up the sample file to a backup file in My Documents
3) try to restore the sample file.

I'm wondering if there is a permissions problem or similar on a temporary
directory.

Another thing to try:

1) copy the .MBF file to your desktop; edit its file properties to assure it
is NOT set to Read Only. I don't know that the latter step is necessary.
Seems it shouldn't be, but who knows for sure?
2) try to restore it--make sure to restore it to a directory that exists.

What I can't remember--and don't have an M05 installation to test--is
whether it asks where you want to put the restore or assumes you want to put
it back where it was when you backed it up relative to the system root. At
any rate, is that location accessible on the restoring system? Is there
already a file there?

If all of this fails, the next best bet may be laying hands on an M05 just
long enough to get back to a .MNY file instead of the .MBF. We'll worry that
when we get there.

Dick,

It is a MBF file that was backed up on my external hard drive just after
Christmas. It was written with Money 2005 directly by using File/Backup. I
am trying to get it to use Money 2006. yes the sample file does work with
M06. I am not sure about the localization thing.

I downloaded the upgrade from M04 to M05 a while back so I don't have the
M05 CD to reinstall M05. The M05 Trial Version (I downloaded) that I got to
open my MBF file just expired last night at midnight. I just bought M06.

I just opened the SAMPLE fle in M06 and it works fine. I will stop here
until you tell me where to go from here. Thanks for your help with this.

What Dick is trying to tell you to do is NOT to open the backup file. Open
the data file instead.

The data file is called My Money.mny.

The backup file is called My Money Backup.mbf

If you have stuff called My Money.M12, .M14 or other stuff like that, those
are the backup files created when you upgrade versions.

If you have changed the file names, to RS Money File, or whatever, then go
to that file. The extension should still be .mny. Use the .mny file. Don't
use the .mbf file(s).

Please tell us the full filename of the file you are trying to work with.
That might help a lot, if we are simply not communicating as to terminology.

If you are asking it to "open" your "money backup" (your words in quotes)
you are still not doing what I've suggested.

Try working through this in an orderly manner with us--and please be
precise:

What kind of Money file do you have? (Money Backup (.MBF), Money data file
(.MNY), multi-part Money backups (.MBF with names include D1, D2, etc) etc)
What type of media is it on? (CD-ROM, floppy, multiple floppies, My
Documents on hard disk, etc) How did it get there? (written directly there
by Money using File|Backup, copied there from a file on the old computer,
copied from a CD-ROM written on old computer, etc) What version of Money was
it written with? Are you sure? Why are you so sure? What version of Money
are you trying to get to use it? ***Does that version work with its own
Sample data file?*** ***Does that version create a File|New in the directory
you want to use?*** If the target version is M05, have you done an Internet
Update since installation? Are you sure both of these versions are for the
same localization (I.e., Money for US or Money for UK but not crossing
over.)

Or, you can open a support case directly with Microsoft at
http://support.microsoft.com. Expect to cover this same ground and more with

I am doing EXACTLY what you are saying to do. I am not double clicking or
restoring. I am opening Explorer and simply trying to open my money backup
file. I get the same results. Invalid Pathname and then I haveto send an
error report to Microsoft and the program shuts down.

Is there someone I can call?

Perhaps I should give a longer answer.

In your case, you don't still have the old disk/Money data file? You just
have a Backup file made with Money's File|Backup tools? If so, use
File|Restore.

Don't Import. Restore.

I couldn't get Money 2006 to recognize my file, even if I double clicked on
the backup file like you said. So, I uninstalled 2006 and installed the
Trial version of 2005 and it works fine. Now, what do I do to get the info
to work on 2006 before my trial runs out?

Please stop trying to mess around with Restores. All you need to do is point
Money at your .mny file and it will recognise it as an earlier version and
convert as appropriate. Use Windows Explorer to navigate to the .mny file
and double click on the file name.
