I don't even bother to write them down anymore, since, as you say, they
occur rarely, and for small amounts. I just wait until they download.

Since checks are downloaded with numbers, add 'Check' to the Excluded Names
list in Payee Rules Manager. That way you get a blank name with the correct
number. You can do the same for ATM, but why?

If you've already entered the check, it should match the existing
transaction. In my case my wife doesn't tell me in advance. I find out about
the check when it clears. (This is not a problem as paper check use by us is
rare, and for only small dollars.) I just go find the checkbook and look at
the carbon, or go to the bank web site and look at the check image, to find
the payee and the date it was written.

Wells Fargo downloaded payee names on checks a long, long time ago, but that
functionality has been gone for years. The banks claim it's because the
handwritten payee names on checks can't be read. I don't know why they used
to be able to do it.

I wouldn't expect too much from another bank. If this is your only problem
with your current bank, it's probably not worth the trouble to switch.

Using online bill pay, either through MS Money or directly from your bank,
will greatly reduce the number of checks you have to write. There are only
two places I write checks to -- my salon (charges a fee to cover the credit
card processor's charge, doesn't take debit) and my dry cleaner (doesn't
take either type of card). That's 7 checks a month, max, and I can tell from
the amount which one it is.

I agree that downloading "check" is stupid, but it's not that big a deal.
Now, "ATM" as a payee is really irritating.

Wachovia says they don't pass that information on but I know it was
downloading a few months ago. I downloaded the data file just to look at
in notepad and they are right....all that is there is "check" and the
number, amount. How stupid is that? I guess I'll have to change banks.

It's happening from one bank. It didn't happen with the initial install
(Money 2006 Standard) but has been happening for a while. I'll call the
bank and see what they say. It might be worthwhile to just download the
data from the bank and setup a new acct in Money and import it in and
see if that helps.

RT,

Just want to make sure we're on the same page. My question meant to
ask if this is happening from one bank's downloads or the downloads
from more than one bank. If your previous answer was that it was
happening multiple times from the same bank, then you may want to call
your bank.

Otherwise, let us know which version of Money you're using, whether
this is a new install, "just started happening", any system changes,
etc. Sorry for any confusion!

Regards,
JB
