Being cynical, I'd say such an option implies but does not specifically> materials" or "do not send me emails re: product updates", it seems as if > there should be an option under passport settings (or better yet, in > Money) > that asks me to choose "Do you want to be able to see your financial > information via the www". preclude data storage on a web server where YOU cannot see it, but it still could be used to aggregate marketing data. I'd rather see a option something like: "Do not permit my financial data to be stored on any server other than one directly under the control of my bank. Allow storage only of accounts specifically managed by that bank." -- Chris Cowles Gainesville, FL |

| Good point...I guess my issue isn't really using the passport account to utilize this valuable service / features (my download from BOA does work seamlessly), but rather their assumption that I want my personal financial information updated to their website without specifically asking me if I want this. I agree with a comment that Dick Watson made in a previous post regarding the coupling of these two services: "Not enough people were actually using the MSN Money access feature before to rapidly advance their plan. The plan is to wean us all from dependence on a locally installed licensed application toward using a web based subscription service without our really noticing or caring. This helps move another large chunk of users in that direction." Dick's comments are right on....and I am surprised MS doesn't give me the option. Just as there are checkboxes regarding "do not send marketing materials" or "do not send me emails re: product updates", it seems as if there should be an option under passport settings (or better yet, in Money) that asks me to choose "Do you want to be able to see your financial information via the www". Thanks for your comments....and if anyone knows how to trick Money or Passport into not publishing this info, please leave a post. As of now, I have only found this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323964 "johnbusc[at]hotmail.com" wrote: - quote - > Matt McLelland wrote: > > I recently signed up to download transaction detail from my Bank (Bank of > > America) into Money 2006. You are implying that your BOA account is in a state where BOA does not> America) into Money 2006. BOA required me to have a passport account offer their Online Banking through Microsoft Money service. If this is correct, it is not BOA that is requiring you to have a passport account rather Microsoft. If you agree to have your transactions download into Money in a state where BOA doesn't offer their Online Banking through Microsoft Money service then you are agreeing, knowingly or otherwise, to have a third-party service aggregate your account data to their servers for subsequent access through Money. BOA's Online Banking through Microsoft Money service, where available, interacts directly with the Money program, does not require a passport account, and is accessed via BOA's servers (not a third-party's). |

| Believe it. Many people, apparently, do want this. Or they accept it as the price for access to all of this Yodlee, etc., downloaded transaction data. Microsoft's long term desire is to wean us all from the locally installed application that we can pay for once and use essentially forever. They'd much rather we used a web-based service that they can meter and/or use to deliver access to our eyeballs to paying advertisers--and enable those advertisers to target their message to specific characteristics they can glean from our data. | Matt again....sorry to respond to my own post: Further research turned up this interesting tidbit...how to remove Money detail from your MSN Money online account: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323964 "Matt McLelland" wrote: - quote - > I recently signed up to download transaction detail from my Bank (Bank of > America) into Money 2006. | I recently signed up to download transaction detail from my Bank (Bank of America) into Money 2006. BOA required me to have a passport account, which I entered during the setup process without really thinking about it until the process was complete and I was completely happy with the way Money interacts with my bank. So then I started thinking about why did they need my passport account, and after reading some of the posts in the forum, discovered it had something to do with their Yodlee service (which is needed, for some reason, to communicate with Bank of America). Further research now shows that ALL OF MY TRANSACTIONS are uploaded to MSN's MoneyCentral site and viewable on the web....which I DO NOT WANT! The service is synching with my .mny file and I am unable to figure out how to make this stop. TOOLS -> OPTIONS -> ACCESS YOUR MONEY DATA ON THE WEB is a dead end. Is there any way to stop this? I can't believe Microsoft "tricks" us into thie "feature". I can't believe anyone would actually want this...someone please tell me there's a way to keep the ability to download transactions without having my personal information uploaded to a Microsoft website!!!! |
