Details to understand:> In fact I was studing last night and I got exactly this. Now everythig > makes > sence. > I will use the strategy below : > 1- I will create a budget for the next year (2006) > 2- And as time as go I will be ajusting the items. > 3- When a regular item becomes irregular I will use the "custom" option > when edit. > 4- When 2006 finish I will create a new budget for 2007 > So I will keep a budget history. And using this history I can improve the > precision of my next budget. 1. While you may enter irregular budget items, such as holiday gifts [at] $1,000/year, Money will annualize the amount and divide by 12 to get a monthly amount. You get around that only by entering custom budgets of, say, $1000 in December. When you do that and look at the budget setup, it still might say 83.33/month. But if you look at the annual report, it will say $1000 in December. 2. Money includes all scheduled bills, deposits and transfers in the budget. You can't change that. It may be A Good Thing or A Bad Thing depending on your own interpretation. The details are that each scheduled transaction affects the budget as of the first scheduled date of the transaction, and until the final scheduled date of the transaction. That final scheduled date is in the lower right corner of the scheduled transaction. If you delete the transaction from the schedule without filling in that date, the scheduled transaction becomes a permanent ghost in your budget. It always affects the budget, and you can't edit or remove it. 3. Debt and Transfers In or Out of budget are special categories you can't control directly. Loan payments and the DRP are in the former. Cash from to/from a 'budget' account from/to a 'non-budget' account are the latter. 4. Debt payments for loans includes all elements of the loan payment in the budget. Don't include the corresponding mortgage interest, property tax, or homeowner's insurance categories in the budget separately, or they'll be double-counted. If you have an interest category for credit cards (not in the DRP) and commingle mortgage interest in the same expense category, you need to create separate categories for credit card vs mortgage interest. Otherwise you'll either double-count mortgage interest or ignore credit card interest. 5. Categories added to the budget do not appear to affect the budget until the following calendar month. That is not true for scheduled transactions. It is true for categories that have a mix of both scheduled transactions and manual adjustments. The scheduled transactions are effective as of the first scheduled date; the manual adjustments are effective as of the subsequent calendar month. Dick - perhaps you can edit this for brevity/clarity and add it to your FAQ? Maybe others can submit other insights for inclusion? |

| Yes! Thanks a lot ! In fact I was studing last night and I got exactly this. Now everythig makes sence. I will use the strategy below : 1- I will create a budget for the next year (2006) 2- And as time as go I will be ajusting the items. 3- When a regular item becomes irregular I will use the "custom" option when edit. 4- When 2006 finish I will create a new budget for 2007 So I will keep a budget history. And using this history I can improve the precision of my next budget. Thanks again Rusty. | Well, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the yearly and monthly budgets work as one. I have created a budget, but I don't pay much attention to it anymore. However, I have made a few corrections in it from time to time. If you make a budget, it will continue on a rolling basis from month to month and year to year. You can adjust it as needed, and you can also have more than one budget too. I hope I made some kind of sense here. | It's difficult (for me anyway) to explain all of the workings in Mny software. You just have to take it one day at a time and experiment with making your own budget. Google can be a big help at times.....Just type in your question. Maybe you could make a test file and experiment with budget making in it. Just a thought. | Hi all! I am new in MS Money or in finantial softwares. I am learning advanced budget and I created a budget, but I have some doubts. I would like to know how is a good way to use the budget. I mean : - How MS Money budget was designed to be used? - How is the way to use budget properly? - I have to create a budget per month or per year? Or I have to create just one budget (per month or per year ?) and edit it when I need? - I would like to know the best form of usage of budget. Just one more thing : - MS Money is very intuitive, and operate it is easy, but the bigest dificult for me is to know the right way of usage. - Some links to "For Dummies" material to learn MS Money or finantial softwares would be greate helpfull. |
