| The quantity shown in Portfolio is "incorrect" or misleading. The value should be correct assuming you have an "as of" date that is > = the date for the reinvest interest transactions you've entered for each of the bond investments. I agree better handling of savings bonds would be nice, but given the length of my Money wish list and how far I can get with SBW and Money combined, I wouldn't put this anywhere near my Top 10 Features Money Needs. There is probably not any neat way for them to do savings bonds that is not a single-purpose solution since the savings bonds don't get valued anywhere but in the Treasury publications. To Microsoft's credit, they are generally very good about coming up with abstracted solutions. This is one case where the abstracted solution doesn't work. Looking at the focus of the last 10 or 20 new features they've added, I'd not expect something like SBW in Money anytime in the next 20 or 30 versions. Maybe it'll make it into Microsoft MSN WebAdsAndMoney 2047? | Dick, To make sure I understand, you are also entering the purchase price of the bond as the quantity and showing the incorrect quantity and value in the portfolio view? | Dick, Yes, frankly this caught me as well. It seemed odd to enter quantity of 100 at $1/each for a total value of $100 when in reality I have 1 bond worth $100 dollars (I'm working in I bonds). | I need to edit that answer in the FAQ. It's not clear on the subject of entering total purchase price for the bonds as value/quantity. | For how I do the savings bonds, see http://umpmfaq.info/faqdb.php?q=42. Each denomination/series is defined as an investment, and, yes, if I hold 5 $100 bonds (investment name, say "US $100 EE Bond - 2005-08")--$50 purchase price--you enter 250 as the qty/value. I agree it's less than ideal. But it does work. To reflect the accrued interest, I just enter a Reinvest Interest for the number of bonds of a given issue/series/type ("US $100 EE Bond - 2005-08") times the interest value I get from SBW. There's one set of these transactions for every bond type. Every time I care to update the valuation, I just update the date on these transactions--to the SBW "price for" date--and the amount of interest. This way I can't tell you what they were worth, say, six months ago, but I do know for 11-30-2005. | Hello, thanks for the reply. To respond to your second question..... I've titled an account "Treasury Securities" and within it store my Savings Bonds individually (by type and issue date). When I purchase them, I enter the 'value' as a number which summates to the total. For example, $100 for the value. Once entered, if I view the "Treasury Securities" account within the portfolio view, the quantity shows 100 with market value of $100. I don't seem to have an option to enter quantity 1 with a purchase price of $100 per bond. I originally entered the bond purchase as a "buy savings bond/CD" as MS Money suggested. Is there a better way here? Also a second question. When the bond pays interest, I was assuming that I would just show reinvested dividends to increase the market value. Correct? Thanks in advance for the assistance. | They don't look here (or anywhere else besides maybe focus groups with clue-challenged non-users near as I can figure) so posting wish list here is pretty useless. See http://umpmfaq.info/faqdb.php?q=66 for ways Microsoft says they pay attention to. I'm curious when you write you "would like to reflect proper purchase quantity and values". Why can't you do this today? I do. The only thing you can't do that you list is get the current valuation--interest accrued--automagically. | I've been using MS Money since the beginning and find it an essential tool for managing my finances. But I've always had trouble with one area! I'd like to put in a feature request for the MS Money development team to improve and allow proper handling of US Savings Bonds. I have both EE and I series bonds and would like to reflect proper purchase quantity and values as well as automate the interest paid and accrued while holding the savings bond. I am currently using MS Monday 2005 and skipped 2006 since it didn't really give me anything. I would upgrade immediately if 2007 had the above feature!!!!! Matt |
