Are you absolutely, positively, sure you didn't take Microsoft up on one of
their incessant online offers to upgrade you old install of M05 to M06?

USB flash drives are handy and are often on sale. A 64- or 128 MB
unit may often be had for $20.

I would install Money 2006 trial onto a different computer. Try a
test file.

Then two things come to mind: on that machine run salv.exe on your
..mny file that you have copied over.

Try to File-> Open or File-> Restore over there.

Ignore warnings about not having access to the business features at
this point. This is about trying to find something to read your
file.

Hi Cal,
I don't have a Flash drive, but I tried opening it from my FireLite
external harddrive (also has FAT files), but it acted the same way and gave
me the same message. When I tried to restore the backup from the Firelite,
it also acted as before and failed.
I'm so discouraged.....

Try copying the files to a USB flash drive and see if you can open
them from there. That, being a FAT partition would take care of this
possibly being an ownership thing.

The password is for a file, rather than the install.

salv.exe would ask for the password too.

You might want to check with Microsoft support on this.

Hello again CAl:
this is just a follow-up to my last reply to you:
I tried changing the updated Money password to my current Strong password
(which is the same password used in the file+backup we're working with), but
it replied with the same message that it can't find the file.

Hi again:
1. I confirmed the Version: 14.0.150.1105.
2. I copied the files to my Desktop.
3. Neither the file nor the backup are Read-Only.
4. Using the updated Money program, I could NOT open the file.
5. I tried to Restore the Backup, but it gave me the same message about not
being able to find the file.

I wonder, might this have something to do with my password? The Money
program only accepts an older password of mine when I open it, while the
files have my newest Strong password (but it never asks me for a password
because it mjl

Confirm your version from Check Help-> About.

Copy the files into your My Documents folder. In Windows Explorer,
make sure that the files are not read-only by right-clicking the
files, and make sure the check-box is cleared.

Then in Money, File-> Open and Browse to the .mny file, and try to
open it.

If no success, File-> Restore your backup, but do not opt to put it
in the default location. Instead Browse to a new location in your My
Documents folder and name the restored file something like
lewisma5.mny .

Hi again Cal:
I was able to update My Money, but it still won't open either the file
or the backup. It gives me that same message each time I try. I sure hope
you have more suggestions! (thanks)

Check Help-> About. Your version should be 14.0.150.1105. If it is
not, let Money 2005 create a new Money file, clicking Decline in the
process. It will do an update. Close Money. Then open Money and
check that Help-> About... says you then have version 14.0.150.1105.

Then you should be able to open or restore your existing files.

Hi Cal,
I receive this error message:
"Money cannot locate [file address] or cannot open it, possibly because it
is a read-only file or you do not have permission to change it or your disk
drive is write protected."
I checked the Properties on both the recovered Money file and backup, and
neigher are marked as Read-Only. I don't know how to check the other issues
listed here.
Thanks.

Keep an extra copy of each file on a different drive in case you get
another drive failure. USB flash drives are very nice for that.

What happens when you File-> Open the .mny file? Is there an error
message?

Default can't open a retrieved MyMoney file

Hello:
My old laptop crashed, but most (all?) of my data was recovered and
restored. a But the My Money files (.mny and the backup) don't open in my MS
Money Small Business 2005, for some reason. Is there a setting I should
check, or can you suggest other things I should try? Getting a bit
desparate....
Thanks.
