| After restoring, check the location of the backup file in tools-> settings on the restored file. Perhaps the restore brings up a path in that area which doesn't exist. -- Glyn Simpson, Microsoft MVP - Money http://money.mvps.org/ Check http://money.mvps.org/faq/ for tips and fixes for MS Money. | THanks, but how will this help me actually try to transfer my data from my old computer by utilizing the backup? Everytime I restore the backup to my new computer, I receive an invalid path error when I try to close the Money file. Using the Browse buttons will insure that you pick locations that exist on the new machine. Money 2006 introduced a useful multiple backup file feature. While the default settings on Money 2007 backups are good, I prefer some changes. Since you are there, here are my suggestions: In M06: Tools-> Settings-> BackupOptions I suggest checking x Automatically backup my Money file every time I close Money Save in [a place on your hard drive ] x Ask me before backing up each time* x Compress Backup Files Keep only the _20_most recent backup files [adjust to taste] x Perform scheduled backups every _7_ days Save in [a USB flash drive location] x Ask me before backing up each time* x Compress Backup Files Keep only the _2_most recent backup files [adjust to taste] Then periodically, perhaps once per month or more, copy your latest backup (uniquely named by Money) to a CDR. With XP, this can be a copy and paste operation. Otherwise use the burning software that came with your CDR drive. I strongly suggest use of a USB Flash rather than floppies. They are bigger, so you don't have to swap media to back up. Plus they are much more reliable (but not failure-proof). There is a problem with Money actually deleting the older files on the USB. Do that manually. It works great for the hard drive backups. * The reason I have Money ask me, is that I don't want to back up each time I exit. If I went into Money 5 times in a day, I would not want to back up 5 times, nor would I want to delete 5 other backup files. You will be given the choice to BackUpNow or to Postpone. |

| I just got a new computer. I was successfully running Money 2006 on my old machine. After successfully installing Money 2006 on the new machine, I've been trying to use my back-up from the old machine to populate the new file with my data (been using money for several years and want to keep the history). The back-up is successful, however if I try to either backup or close the new file I get an "invalid path error". Any ideas on how to fix this? I saw an earlier message regarding the back up to CD causing this error. Might my back-up path be incorrect? I've already had about an hour session with Microsoft on-line chat...they've had me reinstall, try creating new files, and even downloading the trial version incase my installation CD is corrupt, but with absolutely no luck. |
