Default Re: Classifications & Find / Replace

The prime issue with classification that I'm aware of is complete lack of
support for it in Find/Replace and MoneyLink.

Tracking an income property is exactly what I last tried classifications on
and hated it so, instead, I just used regular categories and that worked
perfectly. I set up a expense category called something like "1024 Hillside
Drive" and listed all the different expenses under that as subcategories.
Tracked rental income in a separate income category. If I had 10 rental
properties it would have worked the same way. My reports on the rental
property were clear as a bell and I used them to file my income tax returns
with no problems. We sold the rental property about 3 years ago and I just
don't remember why classifications did not work right but I clearly remember
that they caused me some really annoying problems.

I am sure that you can use classifications so it is a matter of preference
but categories work too.

Bill

Depends on the problem. Tracking income property, for instance, would be
very difficult any way but classification.

I tried Classifications a few times and gave up since they caused more
problems than they solved. Don't remember why but I sure remember that I
hated them.

I bet you can solve your problem using a better category structure. Then
you can use Find and Replace to mass change your old transactions to the new
category. I have made several major revisions of my category structure over
the past 15-20 years using Quicken/Money and Find and Replace saved me every
time.

Very sadly, Money Find/Replace knows nothing about Classification. But Money
05+ does have related links to find great car loan rates scatters on all of
your account registers.

Default Classifications & Find / Replace

I am using Money 2004.

I have been using MS Money for around 10 years now and I have always used
categories / sub-categories to track my expenses. Unfortunately, I now have
many (duplicated categories - the only difference being the property name,
person name, or vehicle name). I learned to late about the power of
Classifications and have tried to come up with a way to mass change (Find
and Replace) duplicate categories / sub-categories to a single category /
sub-category with multiple classifications.

Can this be accomplished through MS Money? Is there a third party product
out there that will allow me to find and change large searches? I hope I
have explained my situation clearly enough.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

John
