I do not have virus or spyware prblems on this computer. end up reinstalling everything. Reinstalling the OS without formatting is actually not a major task. It also may not solve the problem. Hard drives are often on sale pretty cheap. Many come with a disk cloning program. If you cloned the disk, you could try things that seem more drastic with the assurance that you could just swap drives to undo whatever happened since the cloning. |

I do not have virus or spyware prblems on this computer. |

| I am in Canada but as I said it makes no difference if I use the trial version or the CD version both fail with same error. I have 3 computers at home. The trial version AND the CD version both work fine on the other two. The trial version is US Deluxe the Canadian Version is Canadian Standard. There is no meaningful difference between US Standard and Canadian Standard I think. And of course Money 2005 trial works fine. I have tried what you suggest a number of times. This is not an easily solved problem. Everything obvious I have already tried... twice. I am looking for a unique perspective for a unique problem. Thanks anyway. |

Here are two more things you might try: 1. Try creating a new Administrator XP user, and install as that user. 2. Try installing to a different folder/directory than the default. |

| I was pretty sure I had done this before but walked through it again just in case. Same result. I cannot install the downloaded trial version or my CD version. The error is identical and refers to some components not being installed (anyone able to list all required components so I can manually address them 1 by 1?). I uninstalled the Money toolkit, edited the registry and all of that.. no difference. I mentioned earlier that I can install Money 2005 no propblem so its all a 2006 thing and makes no difference if CDN or US, Standard or deluxe. And yes I do have my regional settings correct though it makes no difference if I choose CDN or US. I may try paying for full Microsoft support since I see no other way out of this predicament... not sure... do they still bill if they can't solve the problem? |

| Since the MSN Money Investment Toolbox also uses Money 2006, have you tried removing that from Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs (if it is listed)? Try going out to the MSN Money website: http://money.msn.com click Portfolio at the top right and see if you can install the "Deluxe" version (the Toolbox) Since you mentioned this is the Canadian version, are Windows' Regional Settings set to English (Canada)? You might also try downloading the US Trial version from http://microsoft.com/money just to see if it will install. If it will, then try uninstalling it and re-install your Canadian version. -Mark <pkrobin[at]hotmail.com> wrote in message news:1127666433.755883.58320[at]g49g2000cwa.googlegroups.com... - quote - > Thankjs to the 4 of you, here is my collective response: > I gave up on Microsoft because it was a 90 minute plus call and I had a > small baby on my lap. | Not having read your original post in detail, did you hack the registry to eliminate all vestiges of Money? Your description of your abilities suggest you'd be competent to do that. pkrobin[at]hotmail.com wrote: - quote - > ...I could obviously format and rebuild I can do that in my sleep ... |

| Thankjs to the 4 of you, here is my collective response: I gave up on Microsoft because it was a 90 minute plus call and I had a small baby on my lap. They had offered nothing other than what was in the Knowledge base. They were in the process of transferring me to "full support" which I assumed was billable and at that point I was thinking.. hmmm. $30 software.. $X per hour of support... maybe I'll just go buy Quicken and import the QIF's... which is what I did but as I mentioned I am not finding Quicken up to par for my specific purpose. I'm pretty sure the only thing I installed around that time was Nero 7.0 but I removed a few other things just in case - mainly some eBay auction management software. I disabled System Restore a long time ago. I don't like stuff like that though this looks like the one time in history I may have liked it. I could obviously format and rebuild I can do that in my sleep but this machine is so tight I just hate to start over. I have no issues with anything ever. I have several PC's to constantly rebuild and restore but this one is my personal one and would take me hours if not days or weeks to reinstall everything. I know there is some sort of file settings transfer utility that I could look into if I have to go that route. Besides... who wants to rebuild a perfect machine because some $30 software won't run? Unfortunately I tried demos of at least 5 other products and none are as good as Money for investment transaction tracking which is all I care about... Somneone sent me a link back to the Knowledge base... that applies only to MS Money 2004 and I tried it already. As I mentioned before I have no problem with MS Money 2005 and am considering simply moving to it but don't really want to because I may be facing this same problem in a year again then when I am forced to upgrade to 2007. Thanks again. |

| In the office this is the point where we re-image the machine at a known version of the operating system and start over from scratch. The only quesitions that I would have are: 1) what programs did you install or de-install just before the first failure? 2) why did you give up on your only hope for resolving the issue. If I were you, I would either look at running it on another machine or reload the operating system on this machine and start over. | This problem is too complex for anyone to try to duplicate and it may be unlikely that anyone has had a similar issue and can propose a direct solution. If this happened to me I would give up and reinstall Windows and all my application shoftware on a clean, completely formatted hard drive. A complete reinstall is a pain but I do it routinely every year or so because it makes my computers run perfectly. I never have weird problems like this anymore since I started the clean reinstall method of annual maintainance. Regards, Bill Wood Fountain Hills, AZ |

| Ok, None of this makes any sense and I would classify this problem in the highly advanced category. I installed Money 2006 fine and it worked for a little over two weeks then one day quit working and gave an error that I didn't write down. A reinstall didn't work so I figured I'd just uninstall and reinstall... made sense at the time. Bottom line... I cannot reinstall this thing at all. I spent 2 hours on the phone with Microsoft the other day (and countless hours on my own) and they can't figure it out either... they were still transferring me department to department when I gave up holding. So here are the facts, I hope someone can help: - When reinstalling I now get this error: "Setup was unable to install some of the components needed to run Money. Try Installing Money Again". - If I go into the program directory and try and run the program (since some of the files are installed) and click \MNYCOREFILES\MSMONEY.EXE I get "Unable to initialize a required Money Component. Please reinstall Money from your original Product Disks", after which if I hit "OK" I get "Windows cannot find c:\program files\microsoft money 2006\MNYCoreFiles\checksku.exe"... this file does not exist on my machine and the version available for download from microsoft is from 2002 or 2003 and not compatible. - I have reinstalled IE6.0 as well as the Microsoft Data Access components and .NET Framework 1.1 (just in case). - no change. - I have reinstalled SP2 - No Change. - I have tried setting up a new administrative user - no change - I have tried alternative install locations (no network drives) - My CD installs fine on other computers in my home - I have no viruses, no spyware, nothing like that. - I made no major changes to my computer around the time money quit working (I wasn't going into it every single day so hard to pinpont an exact date of failure so I actually uninstalled everything I may have added around that time). - When I uninstalled Money I followed all the Knowledge base articles and again with Microsoft Support, this included deleting all registry keys, the Money install directory, my personal Money directory, etc. - Safe mode, or clean boot make no difference. - I do not run Norton anything and I disabled all virus software when trying to reinstall. - Money 2005 installs and uninstalls fine ?!? - I have the Money 2006 CD which doesn't work nor does the downloaded version. Mine is the Canadian version which is the same as the US standard version. Neither the US Standard demo nor my Canadian CD work and the error is the same. - I spent alot of time inputting my stock transactions for a few years so really want to get this back. I alrady bought Quicken after this problem started and do not find it acceptable for my purposes. - I will answer any questions but please read this carefully before asking. I have read everything in the Microsoft Knowledge Base. I have done all the obvious stuff. I have no other problems with my computer or with any other product including all my Microsoft products. Thanks for your help. |
