Default Re: Deleting Account in the Debt Reduction Planner (Money 2003)

Yes, it did make me feel better. I had a manual backup from 2 months ago, so
I only had to re-enter 2 months, but still you have to admit it is a pretty
assinine place to put a Delete Account button.

By the way this is a peer to peer newsgroup, we are just users like you. You
won't find MS here very often so your rant is a bit wasted but I hope it
made you feel better! ;-)

To avoid overwriting your only backup, in Tools-> Options-> Backup
I suggest checking
x Automatically backup to hard disk on exit
x Prompt me before backing up each time*
x Make my file small ...

Then periodically, perhaps once per month or more, copy your
latest backup (named differently from your earlier backups) to a
CDR. With XP, this can be a copy and paste operation. Otherwise
use the burning software that came with your CDR drive.

I strongly suggest use of a USB Flash drive also, in addition to
backing up to your hard drive. They typically act like a big
floppy. For a more automated way to make multiple backups, see
Glyn Simpson's method at http://money.mvps.org/backup.aspx

* This has two advantages. You can change the file name
occasionally. I like to pick a name something like money050916.
Then it is easy to change the name to have multiple backups. The
..mbf extension is automatic. The other advantage is that you can
choose "Don't Back Up, or you change your mind about exiting by
simply clicking the X in the upper right of the pop-up box.

Default Deleting Account in the Debt Reduction Planner (Money 2003)

Why on earth would ANYONE want to delete account as a _common_ action in the
Debt Reduction Planner? I assume "Delete Account" means remove it from the
Debt Reduction Planner not actually DELETE THE ACCOUNT!

A warning dialog isn't enough especially within a context as such. Shame on
me - but for crying out loud what in the world is that button/operation doing
in there?! Hire some UI people to think a little better.

You guys got me on this one, twice as a matter of fact, since I accidentally
deleted an account from my file and then when I exited to use my backup,
auto-backup overwrote it. Geeze!

Please tell me you guys have thought through something as significant as
deleting an account to not be a CASUAL operation and removed it from the Debt
Planner in subsequent versions? If not, please remove that operation from
there and make it a little more difficult to delete an account.
