| Rate our answers? Where and why? It is really safe to download, if the bank you're downloading from complies fully with OFX standards. Some do better than others. Those that don't, don't corrupt your data. They just make editing the download more work than would justify downloading. I've been doing it for years and am quite satisfied with the process. Others disagree. Comments Pro Tem: Chris, is it really safe to download the info? I'd thought about it, but am cluck-cluck-cluck. Also, I guess I'd have to double-check where I am in entries and be sure to start afresh with a new month's balance. Susan, I did in past enter it in checkbook but advice received got me to start doing it the other way, as an entry in Discover account. Dick, guess what? I DID used to use MS Money 2002, but I messed up the computer it was on and so had to transfer backed-up data (at least I did that much right!) to a different secondhand puter, and when the cr*pped-out computer died I got a new one with 2004 Standare OEM Edition. I still had the problem with the old one, though. I will try fiddling with all this next week (Lord willing, please, Lord, be willing!!!) and let you guyz'n'gals know something. Really appreciate the hand-holding and leading thru the valley of the shadow of silicon-based finances. |

| Something about that entry seems backwards. What happens if you enter the transaction in your checking account instead? | I see no hint of downloaded transaction data involved here. I'd say that's a good thing. Others would argue. I think you need to get one month balanced. If you can do that, you should find what's going on. The account should have a beginning balance. If you owed them money and the account type is correctly setup, the register will show a positive value--and a you owe balance at the bottom. New charges should ADD to the liability balance. You should see this in the register. Any credit should reduce the balance. You payment should reduce the balance in both the Discover account liability and the checking account cash balance. Assuming the account beginning balance or opening balance reconciled with your last statement, your new balance this month should as well. If not, test every entry in the Money register against the transactions on the statement and vice versa until you find your problem. This is all just addition and subtraction--no rocket science here. One other thing you might want to do is make sure you look at the register with the view setting set to all transactions all dates and make sure that you don't have some transactions getting reconciled in error. If your file dates to Money 2002, there is a sneak bug here with scheduled transactions that can get you in trouble. If M02 has been involved with this data file, let us know and we'll explain that possibility. Good luck and let us know what you find. | Assuming that your beginning balance is correct: Manually enter the expenses into the discovery register. Split transactions as required. Manually enter payments into your checking account as a withdrawal - transfer to your discover account. The transfer will reduce your outstanding, unpaid expenses. Manually reconcile the account - balance should be the unpaid, outstanding charges for the next months statement (if you pay in full). I've asked this question before and scrupulously followed instructions, but I keep coming up with huge balances for my Discover. Funny thing is, I enter the Visa the same way and it comes out even after I pay it. Can someone explain again, step-by-step, how to enter transactions (often split) into the Discover register and then which way to show I've PAID it (I think that's the problem); I usually pay by check. Normally I enter my charges weekly with "Show Transaction Forms" checked and when I pay the monthly bill I do a Credit, From iscover Card, Category: Transfer from Checking. Thanks. |
