| Only through mutual funds. I have long recommended that people not buy Money online. Read the microsoft.public.money archives at http://grouips.google.com. You will find that few if any posters have said it here more than I. You said the future looks bleak at Microsoft. I'm saying that the future may look bleak to a little individual customer trying to buy and use Microsoft products. But clearly that's not hurting them in the slightest. | If you downloaded MS Money online (Next time order the CD) and after installing an upgrade turn your version into a Trial Version you can do this. 1. Uninstall Money. 2. Resart your computer. 3. Install Money again. Make sure you associate your passport email(and password) with your money file. You MAY OR MAY NOT be asked to do this when installing. If you are not asked when Money first starts up go to Password Manager on the File Menu and Add it there. As MS points out this has to be the same account you purchased Money with. 4. Make sure you stay connected and answer Yes to download additional files. 5. Stay connected until download is complete. Money should let you know when it's done. That's it you should be fine. Just make sure that whenever Money does an upgrade you are logged in with your passport account or you will go back to a trial version. MS really messed this up! I hope they fix it soon. Apparently this has been going on for over a year. "Andrew" wrote: - quote - > If you have already purchased Money this will not help you, but please tell > your friends. | Well I called MS support and to my suprise I got to talk to a live body in less than 30 minutes. However, I was immediately transferred and this time I gave up and left a message after being on hold for 60 minutes. I am now waiting to hear back from MS. I really do not believe they will ever call. Maybe I'll be suprised again. I'm also posting a solution to the problem that took me hours to figure out on my own. | It sounds like you might be a MS shareholder. One thing is for sure I will stand by my statement: "Do not buy MS products online"; at least until MS cleans up it's act. I'm hoping someone at MS will read these posts. "Dick Watson" wrote: - quote - > I know it's not the full product. It never was. Not the first time, not in > the future for reinstall. Ok now I understand, you were not aware when you picked the download version> when you purchase a download. I develop software (thankfully not at MS) > and > what is happen is unacceptable. > Have YOU ever tried using Microsoft support lines or email. There is NO > support there. These newsgroups are your only hope. that you did not get the full product. I agree that internet access should not be required for reinstalls and that MSFT should give you the full product for downloading. Your point is well taken. Well I have attempted to use MSFT support and must agree that it is very poor but I still bet that if you call Customer Service they will send you a CD version of Money for a small extra cost. I have had good luck with customer service. Good luck. Bill Wood |

| I know it's not the full product. It never was. Not the first time, not in the future for reinstall. I addressed that as a weakness of the present buy online scheme. I don't think Microsoft's shareholders think the future looks bleak. | I understand that you don't have to purchase a download. The problem starts when you purchase a download. I develop software (thankfully not at MS) and what is happen is unacceptable. Have YOU ever tried using Microsoft support lines or email. There is NO support there. These newsgroups are your only hope. | I did save the download on CD. But it is not the full product. IF what Microsoft is doing is the future of software sales we will all suffer much grief. The future looks bleak at Microsoft. Wake up! if you don't want to. Right on Money's website under the "Download Now" button that you must have chosen is the "Order Now" button that you click if you want a CD version. Download the trial version and test it out. If you like it, you can buy the CD version off the internet from 20 different places or right from Microsoft's webpage or go to a local store and buy the retail package which has a CD. Call Microsoft customer service, I am sure they will send you a CD version for a small fee. |

| While I generally agree with what you write, I have two comments. 1) Saving the downloaded setup file to a CD would make a world of difference when you need to reinstall it in the future. 2) Eliminating the box and the CD and the retail overhead is the future of software sales. I'm not sure we can--or should want to--stop this trend. What needs to happen is that the producers need to get serious about enabling it by doing things like making it possible to actually get the whole product in a way that can be used in the future or on net-challenged or isolated machines and in all ways consistent with the license. By this I mean that the download has to be one file with the entire product--not just, say, the product less all of the multimedia features--and the patches also have to be downloadable in a file form. Help has to be available in the product for those on net challenged or isolated machines. "Activation" (license keying or revenue protection or theft prevention, depending on how you look at it) has to be accomplished in some form that the customer controls completely in the future (an activation string or key in file form) and can use on net challenged or isolated machines. If the license is transferable from one machine to another or allows installation on, say, both a laptop and a desktop, the key cannot be machine-specific and must be protected from hardware failure in the first machine. This last set of problems is the one nut in all of this that's really hard to crack, so to speak. The factory media and the printed product key serve as one admittedly low barrier to wholesale theft of the software. | If you have already purchased Money this will not help you, but please tell your friends. I recommend never purchasing Microsoft products (in this case I bought Money) online. Here's why, if you ever want to use or reinstall them and you are no longer connected to the internet they will not work. This is a very sad thing Microsoft has done. They will greive many customers with this idiotic scheme. The solution is buy Microsoft products on CD. No future internet connection is required. Microsoft? Are you listening? Wake up! |
