When Money converts your 1999 file it makes a copy as MyMoney.mnx. If the
2002 upgrade fails or isn't to your liking then you can rename the .mnx file
as .mny and reinstall M99. The only thing is that you will have to reinput
all the transactions since you converted.

True no trial version of 2002 exists but you can buy a copy real cheap on
Amazon or eBay. I have no doubt you will be happy with 2002.

You should try 2006 using the trial version. That way you will see how bad
2006 is when you compare it to 2002

Thanks for your reply. My question regarding backup files from Money 99 is
in case during installation of Money 2002 there was a problem could I use
the backup to restore the information lost. I presume that after I upgrade
to 2002 and I shutdown money program I will assume as in the present be
asked if I want to backup. That would save my new money file and I would no
longer need my old money backup files. Not concerned about archiving, did
once many years ago, wish I hadn't. Wish there was a trail version I could
download. It was suggested by Cal Learner a while back that I could download
trail version of 2006 and have two versions of money running if okay buy the
boxed version and convert. Of course I doubt if a trail version of Money
2002 still exists.

I upgraded year by year to 2002 with no problems using my then current
working (.mny) files, not backup files (.mbf). Money simply converts your
active 1999 file to 2002 format the first time you run Money 2002. To be
safe make sure you have extra copies of your 1999 .mny data file in case
anything goes wrong. Once you convert the .mny file to 2002 format it can
no longer be read by 1999. Money automatically makes an extra copy of your
1999 .mny file during the conversion but extra copies are good to have until
you are satisfied everything is working ok. I do not believe 2002 can use
..mbf backup files from earlier versions such as 1999. I would still save
the 99 backups for a year or so in case you ever want to restore them using
Money 1999 for some reason. I am hyper about having plenty of backup copies
because I once managed to loose all but one copy of my backup files when the
data on 3 hard drives was destroyed simultaneously. My son had my only
extra copy (stored offsite) which saved me from a total loss of data going
back about 20 years.
