| HoU, Glad to hear things are better! Let us know if anything changes. I'm more convinced now that what you and the OP were observing is caused by something different than what I'm experiencing. They just produce the same Money error. Especially in light of the size of your data file, I wouldn't expect the type of wait you were originally seeing. Regards, JB |

posting to this newsgroup fixed it. <grinI changed nothing. And now it's working properly. Apparently The only other thing I did was to reboot my router. Can't see where that would have anything to do with it, but perhaps there was a hidden, unfinished process. If there was, it had an obscure name, as I'd been regularly looking at running processes to find msmoney.exe in order to shut it down manually to restart Money 06. Anyway, I'm not going to argue with success. Hopefully M06 will continue to behave properly. |

| HoU, If I understand correctly, you converted from M04 to M06. Is this right? How did you obtain your M06, from CD or web download? If the latter, it may still be updating the Money installation. Did you login to your M04 file with a Passport? If so, and you still have your M04 data file, try reinstalling M04. Then open your M04 data file. If I recall correctly, there's a checkbox or selection of some kind related to whether you want to login with or without access to Passport related functions for that session. Login in without. Once the file opens, close it and convert this file with M06. See if you still have the "money still running" problem. Post back and let us know what you find. Thanks. Regards, JB |

I don't have it set up to do connections on its own, so there should be no Net connections running when I shut down. My data file is around 4.5 MB. I can have Money running for a short time (under 5 minutes) and shut down for several hours. I still see the problem when I try to start it up again. Like the original poster, the only way I can restart Money is to go into Task Manager and shut down the msmoney.exe process. |

| Hi Art, I normally close a program and immediately switch to another already-loaded program; or I double-click an icon to start another program. I have never waited. It appears, however, that when I allow Money to complete it's "displayed activities", it consistently closes properly. Its seems more a work-around than a solution, but it works. Thanks. boB "Art McClinton" wrote: - quote - > I have had this problem and reported it in both Money 2005 and 2006. > Based on what I have been told from the MS Help folk, they think the > problem is related to an error in the user file. | DR, (maybe not as happy as Bob, but...) Answer to (a) and (b) is the same. For whatever reason, the file association between Money and your money files has been removed. Right click on one of your money files and select 'Properties'. From there you should be able to find a button to select which application opens the file. If Money doesn't show up on the application list, you should be able to browse to msmoney.exe and select it. Keep in mind that if your system is setup to "Hide protected operating system files" you may have trouble browsing to the folder where msmoney.exe is. As for question (c), if you're being "forced" to have a passport then your bank doesn't support direct download to Money. If you want to do this directly, you have to do it through the Yodlee service integration which requires setting up MSN access. If you don't want your data on MSN, then you won't be able to get direct downloads from your bank to Money. However, if your bank's website supports downloads, you can import the data into your file. Hope this helps! Regards, JB |

| Since you're a happy camper, thought I'd jump in with a question or two: (a) my money files have no icon. why is this? (b) i can't start my money 2006 files by clicking on the files. why this? i get msg says "(null) is not a Win 32 application) (c) (MOST IMPORTANT) I do not want to have my bank stuff on Money's web page, but I DO wnat to do downloads from my bank to Mon06--is this possible? Seems not, as when I try to set up "online banking" with my bank Mon06 forces me to have a PASSPORT and an online Money acct. Thanks for any insight. | I have had this problem and reported it in both Money 2005 and 2006. Based on what I have been told from the MS Help folk, they think the problem is related to an error in the user file. They have lots of problems from various users. To this end I set up a file with a single FI and started a download of data. I immediately closed Money by hitting the x in upper right hand corner. Money then proceeded to hang and was still hung when I got up the next morning. It appears to me that Money has a problem when it kicks of background banking and if you close money while background banking is running it will not totally close down the window. I tried the same thing with equal results on my 20MB file and after the two backups had finished the icon in the upper banner was still circling indicating it was waiting for data to return. The response when I passed this information on the MS was that I should know better to close out Money while it has a child process open. "That this would cause problems in any Microsoft program!". I have been also told that if I would like this fixed that I should submit a wish list item as they consider it a feature and not a bug as it effects so few people (based on the ones that have emailed the problem to them) that they consider it is data related only. | Hi Patty, Don't give up yet. I installed MSMoney from the internet. After the initial installation the program continued to download for a substantial period of time before all of the options were functional. The program does the downloading autimatically. It gives no indication that this is happening except those you get when you attempt to use some of MSMoney's options. Perhaps it is still downloading? I kinda like 2006 update, now that I have it installed and running. I hope this helps. boB "Patty" wrote: - quote - > I'm having the same problem. If I open the money file and close it immediately, without saving, the delay is 3 seconds. File is 11.6 mb. Al. | Thank you for the responses. I am familiiar with the delay you are describing. I don't think this is the same problem. however. For example... after posting my question on this board I chatted with a neighbor for over an hour. When I returned my computer and attempted to restart Money, over an hour later, MSMoney was still in memory. Typically I have MSMoney open for fairly long periods; usually at least an hour. I often leave it loaded while I do other things. My processor is 3. MHz Pentium 4 with 512 MB of RAM. My Money file is under 12 MB. boB |

| John and Bob My money file is 11mb and I've checked the msmoney process after I've terminated money 2006, and the process is gone in less a second. This is on my Sony laptop (2gh, 512mb). | Bob, If you wait long enough, msmoney.exe will close on its own. Not sure why this is, but you're not the only one who'd like to know. The time it takes appears to be directly proportional to the size of the money file. It appears that when Money 06 opens the file there are background processes that need to complete before a new session is started. If Money is open long enough these will complete and you will be able to close and re-open Money almost immediately. If Money is closed before these background processes complete, msmoney will continue to run and prevent you from starting a new session. How large is your Money file? I've observed a 6 minute wait for 30MB, 2 minutes for 15MB, and less than a minute for 6MB. These times start from the point that Money is first opened. They are also dependent upon processor speed and available memory. Since, on a laptop, the processor speed can also be dependent upon power settings, the times can be affected by whether you're running on battery or not. If it weren't for this one thing, I'd say M06 is an improvement over M05. But I also realize that's not saying much! If you find out anything that improves this situation, please let us know. Thanks. Regards, JB |
