If you tell Money 2006 to create a new file (with a different name)
and if you do not put a Passport onto the new file (click Decline),
you can then do Help-> About... to get your Serial Number, which is
the product ID. I suggest you write it down.

that's a funny answer. what kind of a program dictates the way you can use
it? if she clicks it while it is still running, shouldn't the new instance
recognize that the old one is running, give her the main screen she wants,
and carry on with whatever it's doing in the background? sometimes i think
these things are designed by people who weren't there the day the Big Gates
handed out common sense.

It is usually still performing some on-line banking tasks. Try leaving it
for a long time to see if it closes of it's own.

Thanks for the info, wish I had gotten a few hours ago! I have installed
Money 2006 and so far I am having trouble with it. The same problems that
have been mentioned about Money not closing out completely and then when I go
to reopen the message says that Money is already running. Running where I
would like to know I can't find it anywhere; therefore I have to reboot each
time. Very annoying. I liked Money 02 much better. Wish I hadn't got rid of
it and installed 06. Oh well, I'll manage.

Patty,

Make sure that you have backups of your current money file in a safe place
before you install 2006.

I suggest that you keep 2002 on your computer in case you decide to stay
with 2002. In fact, I would use the free 90 day trial of 2006 before
deciding to purchase it. Installing 2006 will not affect your 2002 file or
your account info as long as you do not let Microsoft delete 2002. After
2006 is installed, it will convert a copy of your 2002 file to 2006 format.
Make sure you use a copy of your 2002 file for this purpose and that you
have a backup copy of the 2002 file in case you need it.

Test 2006 carefully and compare it with 2002. I just did that and concluded
that 2002 was better than 2006. I am definitely not "upgrading" to 2006
which adds no useful features for me and contains a ton of useless bloat and
very annoying advertising. Plus 2006 automatically disables direct
downloading after 2 years which will force you to upgrade again if you want
that feature.

Regards

Bill Wood

No, it will not delete your Money 2002 file or backups.

- quote -

> I thought this would convert all my current information to 2006 upon

That said, if you tell it not to delete your earlier installation,
you could still run Money 2002, but not at the same time. Also note
that if you are using Patty.mny (for example) as your Money 2002
file, it will be converted to a Money 2006 file that is not readable
by the older version. However a backup file in the old format will
be left on your disk.

If you were to copy Patty.mny to Patty06.mny and have Money convert
that file, then Money 2002 could continue to open Patty.mny.

Speaking of backups, one of the really nice things in Money 2006 is
the ability to keep multiple backup files automatically. For your
scheduled backups, I recommend USB flash drives rather than
floppies. They are more convenient and reliable.

In M06: Tools-> Settings-> BackupOptions
I suggest checking
x Automatically backup my Money file every time I close Money
Save in [a place on your hard drive ]
x Ask me before backing up each time*
x Compress Backup Files
Keep only the _20_most recent backup files [adjust to taste]

x Perform scheduled backups every _7_ days
Save in [a USB flash drive location]
x Ask me before backing up each time*
x Compress Backup Files
Keep only the _2_most recent backup files [adjust to taste]

Then periodically, perhaps once per month or more, copy your
latest backup (uniquely named by Money) to a
CDR. With XP, this can be a copy and paste operation. Otherwise
use the burning software that came with your CDR drive.

* The reason I have Money ask me, is that I don't want to back up
each time I exit. If I went into Money 5 times in a day, I would not
want to back up 5 times, nor would I want to delete 5 other backup
files.
You will be given the choice to BackUpNow or to Postpone.

Default Installing new version of Money

I just purchased Money 2006 standard and attempted to install. The first
question was do I want Microsoft to delete my old version of Money 2002 and
install the new version. My question is will this get rid of all my account
information I have on the 2002 version when it installs the new version 2006?
I thought this would convert all my current information to 2006 upon
installing. I called the support number in my paperwork that came with Money
2006 and they cannot help me. Go figure! Can someone out there help me before
I loose all my current information? Thank you.
