Default Re: Hidden Transactions

I hope I remember the routine (I did in a lot with 2004, but not since
then): do a search for the hidden transactions (search by payee or amount).
You'll then see two duplicate transactions and the trick will be to figure
out which is the culprit. I put something imaginative in the memo box such
as X in one and Y in another. I then went into the register to see which one
(X or Y) was visible. Once I knew that, I could got back to the search
results and identify the bad transaction. There isn't a way to delete the
transaction from the search results window, but I could void it.
That brought the register back into balance but the problem is that new
hidden transactions can (and did) reappear. The upgrade to 2005 both deleted
the transactions and prevents new ones from happening.

I am pretty frustrated. I tried John's approach to no avail. My
"hidden" transactions get re-imported but the register and account
balances are still different.

When I try Mark's approach I get:

---------------------------
Microsoft Money
---------------------------
This operation cannot be performed.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

When attempting to delete the account. So I really can't do that
either.

Can you send me your "sort of" fix/hide the
problem? Michael?

Default Re: Hidden Transactions

The problem is that I can't delete the account because there are two
transactions (on the same day as the hidden transactions) that have
some kind of trouble. So when I re-import the transactions from QIF I
am suddenly off by that ammount.

Also, and I know this is my own personal problem, I have some closed
accounts with the same names as my open accounts. This is causing
transactions from those accounts to be posted to the wrong account. I
think I can fix this problem though. In any case, I am still stuck
with the original problem.

I will try John's solution - I in fact have a .QIF file with just those
transactions in them so I hope it works. Thanks for the info guys!

I've done something similar when I have hidden transactions that
I can't find. I didn't know about the above solution. Next time
I have hidden transactions, I'll try it.

In any case, if the above solution does not work, what I've done
is almost certain to work, but it's a lot more effort.

1) Export the account to Loose QIF, and delete the account.

2) Edit the QIF file with notepad and find and delete the hidden
transactions.

3) Import the QIF file creating a new account with the same name
as the account that was deleted.

4) Create a custom "Transaction by Category" report, looking for
anything marked as "Xfer to Deleted Account" or "Xfer from Deleted
Account". Change them to a transfer to/from the new account.

5) Go into the new account and manually remove all duplicate
transactions. When step 2 is complete, all of those transfers
into and out of the new account will exist twice. Once as
a transfer in and once as just an income/expense. Find the
duplicates and delete the one that isn't a transfer.

I've done this procedure a couple of times to delete hidden
transactions. I'll try John's procedure above next time, though.

Default RE: Hidden Transactions

Max,

There is a workaround for this. I had the same problem myself. It was
affecting my cashflow and everything. I can't recall the exact steps but I
can give you the gist.

What you have to do is export the account that you are having problems with.
This will create a file that you can then import again. Before importing the
file, you need to edit the file in notepad and go in and delete all of the
transactions except for the two hidden transacations which will show up in
the exported file. You want to keep all the header info in the file and just
delete the transactions that you can see and leave the ones you can't. Now
you might ask yourself which transactions they are. In my case, they were
always the last transactions. You probably already know the amount you are
off, just compare that with the last transactions in the file. Also, you will
notice that the dates are way in the future by a month or more.

Once you import it, it's like downloading a file from your bank and will
make the hidden transacations visible again and able to delete them.

Now when I say I don't know the exact steps, what I mean is I don't recalll
what you had to leave in the export file in order for the structure to remain
and import successfully but I know this process works.

Just make sure you have a back up and I know you will be able to figure this
out.

There is always the possibility that an upgrade to 2006 would fix it. I
would download the 2006 trial and see. If it works, you can always buy the
SB version.

I would make a backup of the file before giving it a try. Money will make a
copy of the file with an M14 extension, but it doesn't cost anything to have
an extra backup.

I don't think so, Max -- the problem I'm thinking of was fixed with the
04 -> 05 conversion. Do you want the routine to "sort of" fix/hide the
problem?

Which version of Money, Max? If 2004, there's an easier way to "sort of"
correct the issue than the QIF routine. And upgrading to a later version
really fixes it.

Yeah, that doesn't sound like a good solution to me. I'll see if there's
something else we can try.

Default Hidden Transactions

I opened a microsoft case: srx050823607667 in regards to KB article:
838713.

Essentially, I have 2 transactions that will not delete from my money
file, and 3 "hidden" transactions on this date that I cannot delete
either. I was told my file was 'corrupt', though the quick repair file
does not fixt the problem.

This problem causes my register balance (which is correct) to be
different from my actual account balance. The sum of the ammounts on my
3 "hidden" transactions total the discrepancy.

1) I can't balance my account
2) My reports don't have the correct information

I was told that I had to export ALL of my accounts to .QIF, create a
new money file and recover all of my accounts.

Seriously, this is just unnaceptable. That would ammount to several
hours of work as I have about 6 years of data and over 50 accounts. Is
there any one who knows how to edit the money file directly and remove
these hidden transactions? I am certain someone who had access to the
file as a database could find them and remove them. Is there a utility
that will let me view the file directly?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

-Max
