If you turn on display of extension or use a command window dir command, the Money file has a .mny extension, and the backup files are .mbf files. I don't know the reason for the shrinkage, but perhaps you got Money to delete a bunch of old quotes. - quote - > "Cal Learner-- MVP" wrote: > > In microsoft.public.money, Alex wrote: > > > > > > Anyway, whatever it did worked in that my balances now match between the 2 > > > screens. | Well, it's not labeled as a "Microsoft Money Backup File", so no. However, it's virtually the same size as my actual backup file. That seems to be a pretty big coincidence... A bit more background: My money file and backup money file both reside in a folder underneath my My Documents folder. Before running the quick repair utility, I first copied the 38 meg money file over to just a temp folder on my hard drive. Then I launched that file by double-clicking it, and ran the quick repair on it. Now, the file is 12 meg in size. When opening this file, I do get a message from Money asking if this is my "primary" money file or not, since it somehow detected that my Passport is being used on 2 different files. I choose the default, which is "not my primary money file." -I doubt any of that mattters, but I figured I'd throw it in. As for the file size, even if it did save it as a compressed backup, will that hurt me in any way? | Yeah, it happens. You almost definitely didn't lose any data, but Money occasionally optimizes the database and that results in some significant savings. -- "Alex" <Alex[at]discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:C3DB68FF-FFE7-4787-BCFB-E40FA6A4B838[at]microsoft.com... - quote - > Hi all, long time Money user here. | Hi all, long time Money user here. Started with 2001, and have been using 2004 for a couple of years now. Due to a discrepency between the balance of one of my accounts in the register vs. the "account list" screen, I attempted to try the Quick file Repair feature per suggestions from the newsgroup as well as a KB article. (I've never done a file repair before with either 2004 or 2001) Anyway, whatever it did worked in that my balances now match between the 2 screens. However, I notice that now my Money file is about 12 meg, whereas before it was almost 38 meg. Is this normal?? I don't *see* any data missing anywhere, so I'm not sure how it shrunk my file so much unless it compressed the data for some reason. I searched the newgroup and the FAQ and didn't see anything on this, so sorry if it's common knowledge. Thanks in advance for any help! |
