For a while I had a fair number of accounts which did not download
transactions, and I had to do basically what you had to do: Enter
manual transactions, and then visually reconcile them to a website.
I now only have one account like that. If I could download its
transactions, I'd do it in a heartbeat. IMHO, there's not much
comparison as to which is easier.

That being said, I've got something that works for me and you've
got something that works for you. Good for both of us.

OFX downloads work quite well, IMO.

That's exactly how it works for me. I enter banking transactions into
Money, and use the downloads for reconciling cleared checks.

For credit cards, I use the downloads for data entry. There are too many
transactions to enter :-(
My credit card sites have the transaction the next day, so my Money register
is more-or-less up-to-date.
For brokerage accounts, I don't have that many transactions, and the
download is helpful for keeping track of dividends etc.

On the issue of Passport, I never use it. I enabled it as a temporary
measure to help MS tech support. That's why it was a shock to realize how
much detail is available to any tech support agent when Passport is being
used.

I'm not even sure why MS has to transfer all this if Passport is used to
password-protect the file. That is all that I thought I was enabling. I did
not choose to upload my data to MSN Money or use any sort of on-line access
to my data. (nor do I have any interest in finding out about these
features) Even then, the tech support person had the information on the
on-line updates and my account providers etc.

Needless to say, I reverted to an earlier version of backup which does not
have any Passport account associated with it ..

Mark, I enter my daily transactions into Money either via the scheduled
transactions or from a credit card receipt I have. I assume I've
entered the data correctly and to the category and sub-category I want.
My manual checking at the web site daily is for balance and manual
reconciliations of that balance. I know I could download and have money
tell me if it matches, etc. but it is much easier for me this way. I
must admit that I haven't checked out all the download "features" that
current versions of Money has since I left checkfree a few years ago,
but, based on horror stories here, I'm most concerned with keeping my
10 years of data accurate and although I do accept stock data daily
into Money I'm not yet ready to "trust" the downloads from the banks.
This may change over time. Steve

Couldn't you accomplish the exact same security features that you
currently accomplish by manually entering your transactions and
then downloading them into Money instead of looking at the website?
Is the only issue that you haven't found an FI that is "seamless"
enough?

I'm not trying to convert you to be a transaction downloader.
I'm just trying to better understand your reasons.

Aloke,
You have been here a long time and I know you are a long time
Money user. Security is an issue we all must deal with. I would never
use the MS passport or password on my computer or with my annual
updates of Microsoft Money. I deal with my security MYSELF by daily
checking my bank and credit card balances MANUALLY at their web sites
and comparing to my Money account balances. I do not rely on downloads
of data because I KNOW that many vendors are just not yet linked up to
Money for "seamless" integration. I have a brain and I use it to manage
my financial affairs in Money. I'm sure you could do the same. Good
luck.
Steve

She was quite patient and helpful. I set me in the right direction, and I
solved the issue after help from here.

Default Scary episode with using Passport

I was with MS tech support trying to sort out some problems (with duplicate
Fidelity accounts etc .. discussed in another thread). She suggested that I
temporarily password protect my file with Passport because that will let her
see the online transactions and identify the problem.

Sure enough, after enabling passport and doing an online update, she rattled
off my financial institutions, account #, and a who knows what! The point
is, it seemed too easy for a MS employee to know about my personal
information while I was using Passport.

Has MS published what information is made available to them when Passport is
used?
