I spoke with a Microsoft Money support specialist and we've come up with a work-around to the scheduled payment date problem. As of today, in all versions of Money, up to Money 2006, selecting "print check" on an entry in the "Bills and Deposits" list will cause Money to ignore your choice for the date to be printed on a check (twice, actually), and will ALWAYS make that date today's date (whatever date "today" happens to be). That problem carries it's way into the check register, where you find that EVERY payment you entered in the register from the "Bills and Deposits" list has "today's" date, rather than the date that you had set in the "bills and deposits" list when you first entered it into Money. For ALL scheduled payments to be paid with printed checks, set the payment type to "write check" (even though you're printing the check for that payment). When you go to "enter in register," Money will prompt for the check number (not the date). Don't enter a check number, instead left-click on the spinner bar (down-arrow) to the right of the check number and select "print this transaction," and click OK. That preserves the original date you entered for that particular payment and queues it to be printed with your next check print job. There's another check date scenario, however, that is NOT supported in ANY version of Money. Some people (and businesses) do only one or two check runs a month, and always use the same day of the month for the check print date (like one of my former employers). For that scenario, the scheduled payment date is only used to schedule which check run in which that payment is cut (i.e. payment scheduled for the 28th of the month is swept into the upcoming 1st of the month check run, etc.). Quicken has a check print option to change all check dates to the date printed, however Money (all versions) does NOT. |

Has anyone found a solution for this problem? already had Microsoft Money support on the phone for another problem. I suspect that they won't likely change it, because some programmer thought that the way he writes personal checks is the way everyone else using the program should be doing it. The major issue with check dates appears to be when you print your checks. Selecting "write check" keeps the original date and allows you to change the check number. Quicken gives the user the option to change all printed check dates to the date you printed them (as some people prefer), but Money has no such option. Speaking of dates, the default selections for online services also force the check dates to be changed to the date of downloaded transactions. If Money crashes (as it has at least a dozen times within the past few days), you lose your settings and it goes back to the default. Bank Of America's major screwup with their Fleet customer migration made a mess of my accounts, overwriting check dates, and creating four sets of dupes, before I found that the online services settings had changed. |

| This "feature" has been there for many versions now. It really sucks. Sometimes my change when I go to enter to register sticks; many more times not. I've never calibrated to find the difference. They eventually fixed the garbled tax estimator display. Maybe they'll eventually fix this? | Installed the trial Money 2006 to see what was new, and found that the Bills & Deposits section is still broken. Money 2006, just like all the previous versions, refuses to use a scheduled date for a "print check" payment. Instead, it ignores the scheduled date and tries to use today's date when entering the payment in the register. If you change the date back to the scheduled date before entering the payment in the register, Money 2006 will ignore you again, and enter it into the register with today's date anyway. This is a serious issue, since it requires changing hundreds of transactions throughout the year just to get the scheduled payments to print with the dates as scheduled, rather than the date when printed. Has anyone found a solution for this problem? |
