These "automatic updates" only work if roaming (Passport) is enabled.

Never. They will then update only when you select the Update Now option. At
least that's my understanding.

Don't know the answer, but could it be wanting to connect because you are
going to some section that has internet information. Have you tried turning
off add sponsorship (Tools - Options - Program Settings - Turn off
sponsorship and shopping links?

Money 2005 standard. How do I get this program to stop trying to connect to
