| I installed the UK M05 trial version and accessed my file with no problem. It created a .MN9 which is M2K backup file. I'm going to continue using the trial version and see how that goes. Thanks alot everyone for your help. | As Cal notes, you probably are trying to cross country-specific versions. Money cannot do this. The .MN9 tells where you were going wrong at first: It's an M01 backup, not the M2k you said you were trying to restore it with. Good luck. This means that you had a UK file that you tried to access with a US> After installing the trial version, there was an error saying " Money cant > open this file because it was created using a different version of Money". version of Money. You would need to install the UK trial version of Money 2005 to actually access your file with a trial version, or you would have to install a non-trial UK Money 2001 or later (based on your reference to the .mn9 below). - quote - > I then double clicked on the file it created and there was a warning message > saying "You are attempting to open a file of type MS Money 2001 backup > (.MN9). | Thank you very much indeed for all the details you sent me. After installing the trial version, there was an error saying " Money cant open this file because it was created using a different version of Money". I then double clicked on the file it created and there was a warning message saying "You are attempting to open a file of type MS Money 2001 backup (.MN9). This is a Money 2001 file. From what you have said and my understanding, I will just have to obtain a copy of Money2001 in order to run this file. I am surprised that the latest version does not open earlier version of these files. Any comments regarding this? If I cannot open the file, it looks as thouh my work will have to be redone....? | The reason to install the M06 trial and let it try to restore/convert from the backup file is to let it help us figure out what Money version actually wrote the backup file. So, let's recap the steps: - Install the trial version - Double-click on your .MBF file and M06 should take over. It should: - Restore the backup to a .MNY file - Try to open the newly restored .MNY file and discover that it's not an M06 file - Rename the .MNY file as a .Mxx file (this is the magic step) - Convert the data in the .Mxx file to a new .MNY file Once this is done, the decision space opens up given what the xx's in .Mxx file are: - IF the xx's are N8, you can uninstall M06, reinstall M2K, and then try to either: - restore from the .MBF you started with, or - rename the .MN8 file to .MNY and open it with M2K (It's possible both of these steps will leave you back where you started if the data in the .MBF file is somehow munged up.) - If, as I consider more likely, the xx's are .MN9, .M10, .M11, .M12, or ..M14, then your only choice will be to either: - stick it out with M06; go to the store, buy a copy, install it on top of the trial - uninstall M06 and find/install a copy of the appropriate version* and then: - restore from the .MBF you started with, or - rename the .MN8 file to .MNY and open it with M2K *Appropriate versions for xx's: ..MN9 = Money 2001 ..M10 = Money 2002 ..M11 = Money 2003 ..M12 = Money 2004 ..M14 = Money 2005 ..M15 = Money 2006 Hope this helps. | My file is a .MBF file. When you say, " if it shows .MN8, THEN you probably have some other issue and it may be hard to get it to restore with M2K" are you refering to once I have installed the trial version and run the backup at that point? Just I want to clarify my understanding from our discussion and that is once I get the backup file from the Trial Version, then I run Money2k, and open that file created via Money2006. I can then uninstall the Trial Version and hopefully that would work ? Thanks again. | I guess I did stop short of telling the whole story. First, I'm assuming from your original post that you have a .MBF backup file. IF it shows .MN8, THEN you probably have some other issue and it may be hard to get it to restore with M2K. This would be why you got here in the first place. These things happen occasionally and there are no fixes if it's a ..MBF file not a .MNY file. You can uninstall M06 and reinstall M2K, but you may wind up right back where you started. IF it shows .MN9 or higher, then you need to uninstall M06 and reinstall that version of Money or higher. Money data and backup files are version specific and not backward compatible to prior versions. Newer versions know how to deal with them and convert them tot he new format (that's what the M06 trial will do) but older versions are just left completely dumbstruck and usually emit some useless and misleading error message. | To clarify, once I have carried out what you have described, do I then uninstall the M06 Trial Version and then just carry on using Money 2000. I just want to check this with you before do the install. | The most likely case is that the file was created by a version newer than M2k. One way to find out for sure is to download and install the M06 trial. When you open the backup file with M06, it will restore the file then convert it to a new file in the current version format leaving the restored file behind unmodified. When it does this, it will rename the restored file with an extension specific to the Money version the file was created by (.M15=M06, ..M14=M05, .M12=M04, .M11=M03, .M10=M02, .MN9=M01, .MN8=M2k and so forth.) | Hi I am trying to convert/restore my database using Money 2000, which I think but I am unsure was created before Money 2000. I have ensured that the file is not read-only and the file is not being used by another application. I have also tried opening the My Money Backup file, but still get the same message below. I hope that you can help me fix this problem. The Microsoft Money message I am getting is as follows: "Money cannot locate c:\documents and settings\julia\my documents\my money backup\my money.mny or cannot open it, possibly because it is a read-only file. You can change the read-only attribute in Windows Explorer. If you have chosen the correct file and it cannot be accessed, you will need to open your most recent backup file. If the file is being used by another application, close it in another application and try again." Thank you very much in advance. Julia |
