In a Money Development Team Goofy sort of way, that's as logical as anything
I can guess.

Cal --

Since seeing the full category list was the only thing I changed, and I
already removed alimony, child support, ccp/t, and Not An Expense, it
already is. I also left in a few that I hid before, but that, on second
thought, might get used someday. Thanks anyway.

Dick --

I wonder if Not An Expense was supposed to provide a solution to the
perennial rebate/refund question, for people who are frightened by the
negative expense warning. It does sound silly, although not quite as
kindergartenish as the "accounts and bills place." I forget which version
that was, but I always thought Big Bird was going to come out and start
singing next.

Now that you have done that, you might want to consider
File-> Restore to return you to the earlier state.

It will work fine for budgeting. But if you have some account with a debit
balance you want to shrink, ccp/t is useless as it is precisely NOT a
Transfer.

Did you notice the Income category "Not an expense"? What a hoot!

Eureka! I found it!

Restoring the full category list did make it appear. It autofilled a credit
card payment:[credit card name] I was putting into a downloaded transaction
this evening. I had to go and delete it (again? -- I don't remember doing so
before) along with alimony and child support and so forth.

As I was doing so, I noticed that there are quite a few duplicate
categories, such as Utilities and Bills: Water/Sewer. (Bills:[bill type] has
griped me as bad as credit card payment/transfer has griped you, except it's
been there a lot longer). I momentarily thought that maybe MS was trying to
give us more options in categorizing things, so more of us would be happy,
but it probably has more to do with Essential [feature].

But I wonder if, since ccp/t is an *Expense* category, if using it would
allow a user to treat credit card payments as an expense, for those of us
who use credit cards to stretch the "budget," and want more precise "cash
flow forecasting." Hmmmm. Maybe I'll create a dummy file and test that one
myself.

File|New|New File (an oddly redundant menu).

I just tried it again in M06. After you get over your shame for not wanting
a Passport and then get over your shame for not wanting a file password
either, you can tell it you don't want to setup accounts either. Eventually
you can get to a home page. Go to Account List More|Categories and Payees. I
find it right between Clothing and Dining Out.

New Account, or New File?? I'm not sure I understood that.

Just in case you meant that I might have removed it in my regular Money
file, I tried restoring the full category list, but it isn't in there,
either.

Check a File|New in M05 or M06. I think you'll find it there.

Dick --

My curiosity is killing me. You have mentioned this "credit card
payment/transfer" category before, but I have never seen it.

This time, I went into Money and looked for it on purpose. It was nowhere to
be found. I have "credit card payment: [credit card name]" and I have
"transfer:[account name]", The two lists overlap, because, of course, credit
card accounts are a type of accounts. I understand that you could use either
one, and the same thing would happen, because I have used Money since before
they added the "credit card payment" category.

There is no "credit card payment/transfer" category in my 05, and I don't
recall seeing one in 04, either, although I admit I used that version for
only a short time.

So where is it?

One is there to confuse users of the other.

Seriously, there seems to be next to no difference. As near as I can tell,
they added "Credit Card Payment" because many new users could not a grip on
the more normative concept of "Transfer". One difference **may** be (I've
wondered but never proven) that a Credit Card Payment will be found when
Money looks to see if you need to enter a bill payment when you balance the
account and a Transfer is not.

You think that's bad? In M05, they added an expense category called "Credit
Card Payments/Transfer" that has no second account associated and is just a
plain old expense category. How whacked is that? Several of us suggest that
new users just delete that one immediately.

Default credit card payment

To record credit card payments I used to do transfer from bank account
to credit card account. However, I just learned that there's such a
category as "Credit Card Payment:"

What's the diff?
