Default Re: Archiving in Money 2002

Why were you trying to "restore [your] archived file"? Restore is normally
something one does with backups. An archive file is just like any other
Money file. One's only choice is to open it.

Archiving:
1) Takes your current data file and makes a copy of it called the archive
file.
2) Deletes most transactions earlier than the archive date from your current
file and purports to adjust account beginning balances to account for that.

Thus the archive file has all of the transactions after the archive date in
addition to those before the archive date.

There is no ready way to un-archive, nor is there a way to look at the
archive file and not see transactions that are not in:
a) A previous archive file--if you attempt to do something like archive
every year.
b) The current data file.

The only exception to these provisos is if you archive with a date that will
include all transactions in the file.

Note that item 2) above implies that there will always be some transactions
in both files.

Archiving sucks. Don't do it unless you absolutely do not care about the
data you are removing.

The archiving saves a copy of the Money file at the time of
archiving. It then removes non-investment transactions, that are
older than a date you specify, from the continuing file.

If you just archived and wish you did not, you could rename the
archive and let it become your main file. It would not have the
transactions that you had entered after archiving however.
