| Dick, Thanks for that. GB:TS20 does work from Money 2000, and also if I hit with that string in 'Search for options by company symbol' on the http://moneycentral.msn.com/investor.../detail/stock_ quote webpage. But how did you find that GB:TS20 is the symbol for Treasury 4 3Q% 2020 ? I don't see where this alternative is listed. What am I doing wrong? | When I go to http://uk.moneycentral.msn.com and try to get data on either of these (GB:B058DQ5 and GB:B06YGL8), I get nowhere in terms of getting a quote. Given this, it doesn't surprise me that Money gets nowhere asking for a quote for them from MSN. But it does list alternatives GB:TS20 and GB:AUC, both of which it provides quotes for. It also says "Quotes supplied by ComStock, a division of Interactive Data Corporation, and are delayed at least 20 minutes." If GB:TS20 or GB:AUC don't work from Money, I'd consider this possibly a Money/MSN issue since MSN seems to happily quote them. Have you tried either of them? As to why GB:B058DQ5 and GB:B06YGL8 don't work, I'd think ComStock is the reason why, not Money and probably not MSN. | Dick, Using your telephone analogy, I go to directory enquiries (http://moneycentral.msn.com/investor...=http://moneyc entral.msn.com/detail/stock_quote?ipage=qd) and ask for a symbol. My stock is Great Britain Treasury 4 3Q% STK 2020 MSN lists these symbols GB:B058DQ5 and GB:B06YGL8 against this stock? But if I use either of these symbols (with or without a preceding $ sign, in Money 2000), or if I hit on them, I get nothing. Where should I go to get the symbol not likely, but actually, required to ensure Money 2000 retrieves good data for this stock? | Microsoft Money/MSN Does provide the Internet Update facility. But they don't provide the data that goes in on either end. Let me try to simplify it for you. Money knows how to take stock symbols YOU INPUT and go to an MSN server and ask that server to return data for those symbols. Assuming it gets data back for those symbols, it knows what to do with it. The server knows how to take the symbols and look them up in a data set based on data MSN RECEIVES FROM SOMEBODY. If that somebody sends data with symbol "xyz" and you tell Money to ask for symbol "xyz" all is well. If that somebody sends data where symbol "xyz" has been changed to "abc" and you are still asking for "xyz", neither the MSN server nor Money has any clue what to do. Your best bet is to go to the MSN Money site for your country and try to find the security you are looking for in their quotes/symbol lookup mechanism. Whatever symbol that uses is likely what you have to tell Money to ask for (in Investment Details Symbol) to get back good data. It's like your phone: if you call someone and the person who answers the phone you called is speaking Japanese and you only speak English, blaming the phone company is probably not helpful. The connected the call. They can't control the inputs on the ends of that connection. | - quote - > Are you seriously suggesting that MS issue a patch everytime a stock > exchange symbol changes? I was under the impression that Microsoft provided the internet update facility, so my reasoning was this: I purchased MS Money for which Microsoft provide an internet update facility. This has worked okay up until recently when it suddenly stopped working, I suppose because of something Microsoft did to the update facility at their end. I've found out that the only way to fix this is to use something called a "hex editor" to edit the file which looks terribly complicated and technical, and appears after trawling through yet more news posts probably wont work on my copy of Money. If Microsoft changed something that broke the program I'm using then of course I'd like them to provide a little fix for me. If someone else changed something that Microsoft access and use then I'd have thought that every Money user would be affected and that Microsoft would be fixing it. After reading peoples comments it's all looking a lot more murkey. |

| The stock exchange symbols that we are talking about are symbols unique to MSN, as far as I know, and it would not be unreasonable of Microsoft to let their customers know if, for whatever reason, they chose to change them. What is the point in registering the product if it is not to allow the manufacturer to notify known customers of such changes. In UK the London stock exchange has SEDOL and TOPIC codes to identify stocks & shares and it is regrettable that Microsoft does not make it crystal clear that these longstanding symbols are not what Money requires. | I'm using MS Money 2000. When doing the internet update, which has previously been okay, I now see the error message: Online Quotes and Exchange Rates: Money was unable to retrieve a quote for FTSE (London). The symbol $US:FTSE is invalid. To correct an invalid or expired symbol, go to the Details for that investment from the Portfolio and correct or delete the symbol. How can I correct this problem? Many thanks. James |
