Glad that is on track. There should be a *.mn6 file from when yourMoney 98 file was converted. It is a copy of your Money 98 file at that point. The date stamp could be interesting too. |

| What I meant to say is that I (me) didn't - I'm going to ask around and see if anyone upgraded before I try the 2004 download. Thanks for you help. |

| Nope - hate to say it, but its the only Money Software that Ive ever owned, downloaded or used. The extension is .mbf I think I'll try the newer version and see what it does. I did download a password breaking software - it says the file is not password protected. | Cal - Thanks for the reply - I've asked the same question twice on this newsgroup (first time on a newsgroup - sorry). I am trying to restore it to the version I created it in. | I hope that I am asking this question in the correct format. I am also being asked for a password to restore a backup that I did not set. I was using Microsoft Money 2000 Standard Edition Version 8 when I decided to try Quicken. Now I need to restore the file to retrieve some information and it requires a password. I was sure that I didn't password protect it, but I downloaded a trial to a password cracker utility and it says that the file is not password protected. Now I'm stuck. Is there hope? |

| FWIW, Paetra, all of what Cal explained to you was also explained in excruciating detail by the dialog boxes Money popped up when upgrading your M98 file to M04. They put these there just so you might read them and understand that you upgraded data file would not be backward compatible and how to get back to the backup created during the upgrade. | I had Microsoft Money 98 on my computer. My computer broke and I got a laptop with a newer version. I applied my backup to the newer version with no problems. When I got my other computer running and tried to put my backed up data onto the 98 version it would not allow it. I then downloaded a trial version of 2004 onto my computer and it allowed me to use my backup. The trial version expired and I decided the 98 worked just fine for now. I spoke to a support person from Gateway who told me to uninstall the trial version and reinstall my 98 version and my data would all come back - that I would lose nothing. That did not happen and now I cannot access any of my data. I am also unable to open any of my backed up files. All of them say I need a password and I have never required passwords to get into any of my files. I have tried every password I have used for anything and nothing works so it seems that it has something to do with switching from a newer program. Is there some way I can open my backed up files without the password? |
