Not as far as I know.

I am sure that the Money developers know what the triggers are but I have
never been able to work out what is needed to force a compaction.

Is there a way to force an auto-compact? I didn't even know such
a thing existed.

Wait until the next time it thinks to auto-compact. It may be smaller then.

This didn't appear to help me at all. In fact, my file is 52 KiB
*bigger* after trying this! This is surprising to me, because,
as a daily transaction downloader, I also download quotes (almost)
every day and have done so for the last 4 years. I would have
expected that my old quotes would have been substantial.

My methodology:

1) Money not running
2) Copy "My Money.mny" to "My Money2.mny"
3) Open "My Money.mny"
4) Run step 2 above
5) Exit Money
6) Compare "My Money.mny" to "My Money2.mny". Latter is 52 KiB larger.
7) Re-open "My Money.mny"
8) Exit Money
6) Compare "My Money.mny" to "My Money2.mny". Latter is 52 KiB larger.

Didn't know about this one. Does it really help that much?

Oh, and my M04 file is roughly 23 MiB. It contains data from
about 6/01.

If you are looking to not see the old data, archiving may be for
you. It better matches the sense of order for some people.

If you are looking to make your file appreciably smaller and faster,
archiving is unlikely to achieve your expectations.

Before archiving make an extra copy of your file and backup files.

That's a heck of a start. But I'm not sure either exist prior to M04. I
can't tell you where these are in M05.

quotes. My quotes list is maybe 30 or 40 long.

I get quotes most every day on my current holdings only. I usually have about
50 positions.

Mine is 88.2MB. I am running M2003 and the file has data to Oct 1997.

I would prefer never to archive so as to have the historical information
readily available.

I'm at relatively punt 17 Mb. That's since 1998. Just started tracking
all my credit card accounts in Money about two years ago (about seven or
eight such accounts), so I'd expect it to grow quicker now.

My file is about 59MB. I find compelling reasons to not archive. There
doesn't seem to be a hard limit anywhere near where any of us are. There may
be practical limits.

My current is about 10 meg. I suggest you may want to archive some of
the older data as Money does slow down with larger files.
