| I finally managed to fix this by creating a new account, moving all the transactions from the old account to the new account and deleting the old account. | Again--from an old post--this may help someone encountering accout totals errors. Finally tracked down the problerm and now have MSMoney05 working the way it was intended. Neither the issue and the solution were obvious. There were 15 accounts and some of them had assets that when viewed in the portfolio section presented different Market Total vauations depending on whether one was viewing the portfolio with the positions view or with the accounts view. Naturally enough, I felt the issue should reside with either the assets in question, or in the accounts that held them. Neither assumption was true. I customized the portfolio view to exclude all the accounts and added 7 back at a time. Interestingly, the first 7 ran in the portfolio page just fine, but the second 7, when added casued incorrect values, not within the second 7 accounts, but in the totals a few of the of the first 7. I then added each of the 7 accounts back one at a time until I identified the specific account that was causing the incorrect totals. That particular account itself had correct totals, but when added to the portfolio section produced incorrect results in other accounts. I exported that account, then deleted it from msmoney, and then imported the account from where I had exported it. Then, after having 'laundering' the account in question by exporting it and importing it, I reselected all of the accounts that I wanted ijncluded when I went to portfolio viewing, and now the program had correct totals for all accounts. My visiting nephew knew how to isolate the account in question. He had experienced many errors after he coverted to M05, and had employed that method to find errant accounts. He is a software engineer by training. I knew the export-reimport trick from this newsgroup, so together we recovered the account and purged it of what must have been errant data. Before we exported and deleted the account we looked at it and found some suspicious entries. After the exporting and re inporting, these entries were gone, so something about the export and inport format cleansed the file in question. Of course we experimented with a copy of the mny file, leaving the original aone until we were confident that we had identified and cured the problem. I hope this helps someone else. To this point there was little gratification in identifying either the problem, or the solution. Thanks to all those who took time to help along the way. I believe that the initial problem occured with the conversion of my data from M04 to M05. | This is from an old post of mine. The general principal of eliminating accounts till the problem goes away, then adding them back one at a time, till it reappears saved the day for me. Note that you don't have to delete the account, but rather simply do not include it in the portfolio that is to be displayed. This feature makes it relatively easy to troubleshoot each account, to see it influence on any abberant totals. | Is a series of accounts that have the issue, or simply one account. If it is a series, you will need to locate the responsible errant account and export the info to qif, then delete the account, and then resetablish the account and import the qif data. To locate the errant account, you should delete half the accounts using a backup copy of your file under a different name such as 'expendablecopy'. Keep deleting 1/2 of the accounts until the error goes away, and until you know which accounts are suspect. Then concentrate on those accounts, eliminating one at a time untill you have located the suspect account. In my case, once I eliminated the one account out of 20 that was supsect, all the other problems resolved. I then resetablished that account as a new account and imported the qif data. If that data was still supsect, I entered the data manually to get everything whole once again. It took a long time to figure out a method to identifiy the errant accouant, but that was the key. | I've also tried going to view transactions from the payee view, searching for the transactions and checking for future bills scheduled to this account. Nothing worked. | I've seen a few people with this problem that I have, but the fix that worked for others does not seem to work for me. I am running Windows XP with Money 2004 Small Business. Here is the procedure I have followed: 1. Make a copy of your Money data file. 2. Open that copy. 3. Delete ALL transactions in the problem account. 4. Export that account as a QIF file 5. Examine the QIF file in Notepad. 6. If it is not empty and shows one or more transactions, then those are likely the culprits. The only transaction in the exported QIF file is a 0 dollar opening balance. Since the problem transactions are not in there, importing the file does not show me the problem transactions in money. After following the above procedure to delete the transactions in the account, I noted the following points: 1. In the account list, it shows a negative balance of $13,500. 2. In the transaction register with 'all transactions' selected, it shows a zero balance. 3. In the transaction register with 'unreconciled transactions' selected, it shows a $13,500 balance. 4. In the transaction register with 'unaccepted transactions' selected, it shows a $13,500 balance. The starting balance in the account details is set to zero. I've tried file repair a few times and I have followed the procedure in Microsoft support article 838713. Any ideas on what to do next? Tod |
