That did it! Thanks. I didn't know you could do that. And for
the sake of clarity, you have to click on the first Rename button
(e.g. to rename the Investment account), not on the 2nd Rename button
(which will rename the cash account).

M04: it's a bit cryptic. Go into Account Details for the Investment Account.
Go to Rename (IIRC). There's a check box there. If you uncheck it, the cash
account will be left floating alone and can be deleted.

M05: IIRC, it's more explicit here.

How do you zap the cash account? I've never had an investment
account w/o an associated cash account. So I've created an account
that's just an investment account not held at any FI. It's not
obvious to me how to zap the cash account.

It used to be possible to create one directly without the associated cash
account. Now (M04, anyway) it assumes you want one and makes you go and
delete it if you don't. For an account marked in details as
retirement--telling it you are creating a 401k account does this--I think it
insists you have one. For some accounts--Fidelity mutual fund IRA,
say--there is simply no reason to have the cash account. To do that, you
have to tell it the accouont is tax deferred but not retirement. Then you
can zap the cash account.

Just for clarity, when you create an investment account, Money
automatically creates the associated cash account. I don't know
of any way to create an investment account w/out a cash account.
Was that a feature of older versions of Money? Is there a way to
do that in current versions of Money?

I don't know if anyone ever thanks you for maintaining the UFAQ,
but let me. Thank you. It's a very useful resource.

Money provides Investments and Investment Accounts as vehicles to follow
market behavior of specific investment vehicles and to follow the
performance of holdings in these investments respectively.

Money provides tools for you to do a fair job tracking 401(k) investments
using Investment holdings in Investment Accounts. There is help on this in
on-line help, in an unofficial FAQ for this newsgroup
(http://umpmfaq.info/faqdb.php?cat=10), and in the archives for this
newsgroup--do an advanced search for newsgroup microsoft.public.money at
http://groups.google.com. Beyond that, tracking 401ks is a very complex
subject give the many variations in the plans, personal circumstance and
requirements, and things like availability of information from the plans and
electronic interfaces of the plans to Money. For these reasons, no "cookbook
answer" is really possible in the NG. But many of us would be glad to help
with specific questions.

The basic drill for Money:
- create an investment account and an associated cash account.
- transfer the cash for your contributions and recognize--a number of
possible ways here--how your employer's contribution gets there as well.
- use that cash to Buy holdings in Investments you define to match the plan
and your investment allocations in it. Here, too, there are MANY options
depending on the plan and its investment options and mechanics. Some plans
are just like tracking, say, a personal mutual fund investment in a regular
mutual fund with regular buys and dividends and market quoted share prices
and so on. At the other end of the scale, some plans just tell you total
periodic cash value of your holdings and give no idea how it got to be this
much and not much idea about what that holding really is since it isn't a
market-traded investment.

I've been meaning to add a 401(k) primer page to the UFAQ for some time.
I've got an outline and some snippets of text. Higher priority things like
life keep getting in the way.

Default Tracking Mutual Funds from ING

I have a 401k plan that invests in mutual funds, which update their amounts
daily. Is there somewhere I can add this to Money and start tracking how
well or bad these investments are doing.
