| I should expand that to say this needs to be so just long enough for the one system to export a QIF file that the other one can understand correctly when importing. | Ok. I think we are there. The secret here is "both accessible when I open Money." See http://umpmfaq.info/faqdb.php?q=90. Beware that the QIF export won't export all of the account details like number and transaction download login information. Important Beware also that any Transfers reflected in the account being imported will either A) not be resolved on the import side, or B) may be reflected if the correct account with the same Money account name for the opposite side of the transfer exists in the importing file, or C) will wreak havoc if a different account with the same Money account name for the opposite side of the transfer exists in the importing file. An example of the last case is transfers to "Savings" when there is already a different "Savings" account in the importing file. Both systems need to be set for the same date and currency settings in the control panel for regional settings. | I guess we're not communicating. I'll try again, but failing that I don't know what else to communicate, sorry: I have a bank checking account in the State Bank of Reading that I keep on my HP. I have a bank checking account in the Security State bank of Hamilton that I keep on my Dell. I want to have both bank checking accounts on the HP and both accessible when I open Money. I could do this if I wanted to set up the two accounts from scratch and enter the checking information into them manually. With over 7000 entries in each of the checking accounts, I don't want to do that. I want to be able to create the accounts in Money with all of the information "imported" somehow. Hope that's more clear than before. "Dick Watson" wrote: - quote - > I'm not trying to be pedantic just to annoy you or something. | I'm not trying to be pedantic just to annoy you or something. Clarity is important to both of us understanding and to you getting a) the right answer to the question you are posing, and b) an answer that helps you meet your objectives. Money uses one data file at a time. Each data file can have many Money Accounts which represent real world accounts (e.g., Checking, Visa, Fidelity Investments Brokerage). If you want to, say, report on data from two Money accounts at the same time (e.g., total and list everything you spent on Automobile:Gasoline from both Checking and Visa accounts), they must both be in the same data file. You can have two or many more Money data files (e.g., "My Money Data.MNY" and "Mom's Money Data.MNY") on the same computer and open them separately and sequentially with shortcuts and/or Money File|Open. Assuming the latter case is what you want to do, copy the .MNY file with the data you are interested in from the second machine to the first. Double-click on it. If it's from an older version of Money, Money will irreversibly upgrade the file to its own version-specific format. When you say "I simply want to bring both 'data files' into the same Money program" I still worry that we are not communicating. Based on many years reading and posting in the NG, I think you might mean you want to merge account data from two Money files (on two computers) into one Money data file. Perhaps I am wrong. | Your assumption as listed in # 2) is correct. As to the assertion that bank accounts are something you have at a bank, perhaps Microsoft shouldn't refer to them as accounts in Money and I wouldn't have either. Sorry, I guess I should have known better. Thanks for the "lesson". All I'm trying to do is have two "data files" tracking two different "bank accounts" in the same money program. Right now I have one bank account on one computer and a different one on the other computer. I simply want to bring both "data files" into the same Money program on only one computer. I will gladly do that on the Money 2005 computer. Can we try again now that I have learned my lesson in semantics? Thanks! | 1) M04 and M05 cannot open the same Money data file. They are different formats. M05 can open and irreversibly upgrade an M04 file. M04 can do nothing at all with an M05 file. 2) Bank Accounts are something you have at a bank. Money data files are something you have on your computer. I'm not clear on what you are trying to achieve. My best guess is that you are intent on copying the data for a given Money Account from the Money data file on the M05 laptop to the Money data file on the M04 machine??? 3) Data for an account in Money cannot readily be moved from one Money data file, of any version, to another Money data file, of the same or some other version. There are ways this can be done, but I'm hesitant to go into all of that until we both have a much clearer picture of what you are trying to achieve. | I have money 2004 on this computer with two seperate bank accounts being tracked. I have Money 2005 on my laptop and want to move the bank account from that computer to this one and have it show as another account with all the transactions. I have tried "import", I have tried creating a new account and then "import", as well as backup restore. All to no avail. I then tried two installations of Money 2005 and still can't do it. Can someone help? Thanks! |
