Like many others, TurboTax lost me as a customer when they went to the
Product Activation model - meaning one licensed user per copy. In 2003
- the year they went to that model and I switched, they covertly
installed C-Dilla malware to monitor your cd-burner forever after the
install. They'll never regain my trust after treating me like a
software pirate.

TaxCut allows you to share the program with your family. I don't even
have a need for this option, but I'm sick of facist software licensing
policies. Heck, the software is only useful for one year - now you want
to rent it to me instead of sell it? I have to buy it again anyway the
next year! I will always despise product licensing, but as a network
admin supporting a MS environment, I live with it daily for work. But
not at home - not on my tax software.

In online reviews, I've generally read that TaxCut is a little more
work, but a little more useful for those who don't need complete
hand-holding.

Part of it, I would guess, is as Bing suggested. I know the other
better. However there are two other reasons. First I spent a lot of my
life in a job involving accounting (notice how I avoided suggesting I was an
accountant) and the Turbo is just too dumbed down for me and the approach
just seems wrong. That is not to say that TaxCut is all that different, but
it is a little better. However the real reason is the interface and
feedback of Turbo left me wondering far too often if it was considering this
or that and would it take care of it. In the end it did, but I did not like
it hiding so much of the work it was doing. Some may like that.

I personally have a history going back to the early days of Intuit when
the bought out a company with a competing program I had been using (not a
tax program) that was great for those with some sort of accounting
background and then just killed it as it was part of their competition.

I have used TaxCut for some years. I make the mistake of picking up
Turbo this year. I was reminded whey I hate anything from Quicken.

Go to IRS.gov and find the "free file" link. To shortcut to free
TurboTax, just browse to taxfreedom.com.

I have used TaxCut and Turbo Tax and I have found Turbo Tax easier to use.
For example, Turbo Tax allows you to download tax information from a lot
more financial institutions that TaxCut does. Did you know that by going
out to the IRS website you can use either of these programs for free
beginning this year?

They both work well for most. If you have K-1s, there may be some
advantage to TurboTax.

Default Taxcut or Turbotax?

I was wondering if anybody had any comments regarding either of these
software packages. I have been using Taxcut for years but always wondered
if Turbotax was better.

Thanks!
Richard
