| It's really awful. It's getting worse. I answered another post by mistake a bit higher up. I must have hit new post by accident and not reply. (I've been with this computer way too long.) My problems with M03 are like the Monoliths dividing on Jupiter in 2010. I've only got one checkbook that's ok. Everytime I delete a dual entry in the primary checkbook to try to fix it, it deletes the ones in the secondary checkbooks. (Screws up the credit cards too.) Unfortunately I had lots of accounts that I don't even use linked that primary anymore. I am going to keep the one checkbook that's ok and delete 'everything' I've done for the last 2 days. I'm going to work from the old laptop and enter all the entries beginning with '03 by hand. I will lose years, but maybe it's time to move on. If I don't think of it that way I'll make myself nuts. I've spent 2 1/2 days on this. My family wants dinner tonight! Lynn |

| I'm glad it's working out for you. The truly sad thing is that this is probably the best, most reliable, thing they have to offer. I'd like to think that this adds to the file of cases of problems upgrading--M03 has been the worst release ever in this regard from what I can see--and, since the time they spent on you cost more than they made selling 100 copies of the application, they'd sooner or later get the hint that there are some issues here that need addressed. I'd really like to think that. | Lynn, When you get all done, start looking for duplicate postings. When I completed the same process during an upgrade from 98 to 2000 years ago, all of the "transfer from/to" between accounts were duplicated as the transactions posted from both account imports. I ended up deleting one pair (both accounts) of the entries. If I remember right, the ending balances were correct even with the duplicates. | Hi, I have not lost all the payees or categories. When I put in that 'monster' checkbook from 1992 it put in all the categories and payees I had ever created. I put that in first. My case is not closed with MSFT. I didn't feel like they blew me off. They walked me through quite a few of the transfers and stayed on the phone with me while the checkbook converted. That took about 45 minutes. They called me back 2 hours later to see how I was doing. They left the case open so I could get help with the Investment files if I need. I don't think it's as bad as you and Cal seem to think it is. Some things won't be the same and I'll have to do over some of it, but sometimes change is good. Thanks. - quote - > -----Original Message----- > I hope this works out for you. It's kinda the "when all else fails" way to > get your case closed on Microsoft's part. | I was thinking that this a lot better than where I was, which was having no Money to use except the old version of '99 on the old computer. I'm almost done. You are right that the investment files are a bit 'hokey' but I can pull them off from the Banks or Investment firms and clean them up later. |

Let me get this straight. You have an older computer with a working> excited. I got through to MSFT. There was an error in > the '99 version in a .dll file. I have > about 50 files. (acccounts) install of Money 99. You can move .mny files and/or backup files to an new computer with Money 2003 installed. The new computer, however, cannot restore or convert using the files from the old machine. MS told you there is an error in a dll file on the old machine, so the files produced by your old install cannot be used my Money 2003. There is apparently no way to fix those files, so the best solution is to do a QIF export of the accounts on the old computer and to import them all at the same time to the Money 2003 install. And you are feeling cheerful. Is that about right? I went back to look at your several recent threads to see if I might be missing something. -------------------------- So maybe I should stop right there while you are feeling good. Collecting the qif files at this point to the new machine sounds like a good idea for safety, but I wonder if you really have to give on the actual Money file. This probably won't work easier, but QIF import has its limitations beyond the effort. What I am wondering is if you were to put a version of salv.exe over on the old machine, could it produce a .mny file you could successfully convert on the new machine. Perhaps the version on your Money 2003 disk would work or perhaps the newest one available from the MS web site would be better. http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;274584 has the info. If you do the QIF import thing, Richard Bollar has discovered that it is better that the investment accounts be imported first in the process. How? Name the QIF files such that they come first alphabetically. So you could, for example, lead off each QIF file name with an underscore. That will alphabetize before numbers and letters. And a plus of QIF import is that you will have a clean file. Another thing I would consider is to install Money 2003 on the old machine: 1. After you have pulled off the .qif files. 2. Into a different folder Expect both Money 2003 and Money 99 to both work on the old machine. Then see if Money 2003 could do the conversion there. OK. So these may be blind hope, but you might find them worth a try. Or perhaps installing Money 2000 would convert successfully. Just grasping. Perhaps acceptance of your fate is the best. Sorry. Hope this is not the fate of many users. |

| I hope this works out for you. It's kinda the "when all else fails" way to get your case closed on Microsoft's part. It will get you there, but you will lose all kinds of data like payee information, custom categories, scheduled bills, etc. You might try some of the other methods as well. They may not be as foolproof as the Export/Import route, and they may not work at all, but if they do, you will get much better overall results. | I am on my way to recovering all! Yeah! I am so excited. I got through to MSFT. There was an error in the '99 version in a .dll file. The only way to overcome this problem is to export and import each file individually. I did my largest and most used file, a checking account and it took about 45 minutes, but it did work. My register shows entries back to 1992, just like the '99 version. They all must be named the same in 03 as 99, so it's important to check this correctly. I appreciate your responses to me. Maybe what I told you will help you help someone else. It is possible to go 03 from 99 if you've got the old data even if there's an obscure error. I'm taking 2-3 files at a time, putting them on the JumpDrive so I can be careful and deliberate. I have about 50 files. (acccounts) Thanks again. - quote - > -----Original Message----- > So, it sound like you have a good M03 installation and lots of room to > recover here. | So, it sound like you have a good M03 installation and lots of room to recover here. This is all good. Were I you, I'd first be very sure that I have good copies backed up in several forms of the now working M99 data file. When things get ugly they have a nasty tendency to get worse. That's your path back to access to your data in M99. Go into the existing data file on the old version on the old machine. Do a File|Open and from this dialog box figure out where--what directory--it is looking for the file. Note the Money files already in this directory. Is this/are these the one(s) you copied to the JumpDrive and then to the new computer/version? If not, try copying these over to the new machine/version with the JumpDrive. Have you tried msmoney -s **on a copy** of your Money file on the M99 machine and then tired copying this repaired copy over to the new machine/version? (I believe msmoney -s works on the most recently opened file. Given this, make the copy of the data file in Windows Explorer. Double click on the copy. After it opens, exit Money--now the most recently opened file will be the copy. Run msmoney -s. Have you tried downloading the current salv.exe tool and running it **on a copy** of your Money file on the M99 machine and then tired copying this salvaged copy over to the new machine/version? If you need more on msmoney -s and salv, see the FAQ or the MSKB or post back. | Thanks for sticking with me. I was online with MSFT on hold for 1 hour and 45 minutes after I paid the 35.00 last night and never got in. I do have a case # though and I can continue trying them. The answer to your questions: 1, my old version is Money 99. (I can turn it on and look up where it is, what exactly are you wanting to know?) 2, Yes, the old version works and is still up to date on the old machine and worst case I can continue using as is. I also have 3 backup floppies up to date. 3, Yes, I opened the sample of Money 2003, saw things like the Woodgrove Bank checking balance and water bills and such. I do appreciate your help. I have been using Money since the '80's when it came as OEM with a Columbia computer. Remember them? I am stumped by what should be a seemless transfer of data. Thanks, Lynn |

| Please answer three questions (you may have already answered the first one of these, I can't remember): 1) Version and locale of the old Money installation on your old machine. 2) Can you open your old Money file in the old version on the old machine and see your data? 3) Can you open the sample file with the new Money version on the new machine and, once open, does it look right? | I don't understand why it asked me that either. I had never seen that before. I called Compaq back and I reinstalled the Money 2003. After I did get that box 'asking what I wanted to open a file with' that already had the .mny, I did get further along in the transfer of files process than I had ever gotten before. It kept saying 'working' and 'converting' but nothing was there when done. It looked like a 'brand new Money.' My favorites nor any of my files were there. If I click the bakup, or the db1, or the .mny files that I created and copied from the JumpDrive to the C drive it does open Money 2003, execept that first attempt at the .mny when it asked the question. But no data is ever there, whether using the restore backup from File or using Open from File and then chosing .mny. I agree getting the first message with the .mny extension was a stumper. I am not going to open Money again until I pop for the 35.00 and call MSFT. (I did reinstall Money 2003 from the restore on Compaq Quick Restore) MSFT toll free said it was Compaq's problem as they've paid them to help new users with software that OEM. (This computer is only 5 days old) Compaq says it works to thier satisfaction and it's my problem. It's pretty exasperating as I've been trying this all day. I don't get errors on Money 2003. It keeps working and converting no matter which file I use, then stops working and none of my personal data is there. Thanks for trying to help me. I know those files are there, both on the JumpDrive and my C: Drive. |

| I guess there are lots of things here that I don't understand. I don't know why the new system would ask you what you want to open a .MNY file with. If Money is properly installed, it should have registered the ..MNY extension. Was Money not already installed on the new system when you started this? If you double click the file (the one you copied to the new system) on your old system does it open with your data???
