While I agree with Dick's comment that some things just take a long time
with Money 2004 and 5 (I don't remember it being as bad in 2003) I will
point out that each time I see a non-obvious task taking longer than normal
(category moves and deletes are BIG sorts and updates for the Jet database
(which ain't so good in the first place) ) I do a repair. If quick doesn't
do it, standard comes next.

I must do a repair a couple times per month but my performance has been good
since I got into the habit.

I just ran the salvage utility on my file and it seems to have fixed the
Category issue but screwed up a whole bunch of other stuff. When I ran
salvage the log stated there were no broken records but it sure fixed the
categories. Now back to see if I can straighten out the other stuff. Hope
my travails may be of some help to others.

that when I get to Task Manager it shows Money as Not Responding. I don't
think this is just a slowdown but some type of crash. When i say the OS
gets quirky non functional would be a better description. Which is pretty
bad as I've found XP quite crash proof to this point.
Most of the Categories I tried only had a few transactions. Seems a little
odd that for moving a category with a few transactions in it would take
this much computing power to move them to a new Category. Money should
already know which transactions need to be moved as they show up in the
Category instantly. BTW I'm running a fairly fast machine that runs most
intensive software quite well. I just tried again as I was writing this
reply and I did get one Category with 1 transaction to move but then it
locked up as I was trying to create a new Category. Now I'm just about
crashing here as I tried moving one with maybe a hundred transactions or
so.
By your reply I couldn't quite tell if you have had similar symptoms or
just a long wait. I searched the group and didn't see any other posts
complaining about this and hope maybe you or someone else can maybe guide
me to a fix. I guess my next step will be maybe to try installing on my
wife's machine and see if I get the same behavior.
Do you think this could be some type of file corruption issue?
I guess I could work around this by using find and replace but its a little
frustrating having to find workarounds for functions the software was
designed for.

How long is "forever"?

Depending on how much data you have, and how fast a computer you have, this
can take a LONG time as Money has to look through all of the transactions
figuring out what to do and then doing it to all of those transaction
records. On a slow machine with lots of data, tens of minutes or more
wouldn't surprise me at all. Why does the OS get "real quirky and slow" and
the hourglass show? Because the computer is very busy. It doesn't have time
for you just now. Money isn't even listening to you at the moment. That's
why the hourglass.
