| It is a 0% interest account so that is not an issue. I appreciate the input. I understand the accounting angle of all this, but I wasn't using Money when I incurred the debt and it seems that for a personal finance manager, it overly complicates things Dick Watson wrote: - quote - > IF the CC account is not set to be "In budget" THEN the scheduled transfer > to the CC should be reflected in BP as Transfer Out of Budget Accounts. > Maybe this works for what you want to see--but now the interest expenses > will not be budget for. | IF the CC account is not set to be "In budget" THEN the scheduled transfer to the CC should be reflected in BP as Transfer Out of Budget Accounts. Maybe this works for what you want to see--but now the interest expenses will not be budget for. As noted in the previous post, these are the one thing that should be budgeted for. | The pedantic answer is that paying down this debt is not a "Budget" issue except for the currently incurred interest expense. Budgeting for expenses you incurred a long time ago is like trying to steer going forward by looking in the rear view mirror. It's a cash flow issue in that servicing it reduces the cash available for spending now. Money mixes the two occasionally and it causes even more confusion. They probably hoped it would lower confusion among people who didn't understand the pedantic answer. If the account is closed, and you want to track the balance in Money, then maybe adding this debt to a Debt Reduction Plan is your best bet. IIRC, debts managed by DRP will be included in the "reduction of available cash" shown in BP under the Debt section. | I think I worked out a way to do this. I just made sure the CC account is not in the budget and I just setup a bill to pay the CC. When I enter it into the register, I add another transaction to the debt account to reduce the balance by that much. I think it is stupid I have to do this manually. It doesn't seem to be that complicated of a request. | Thanks. As I said in my reply to Bob, I'm not using the CC account (it is actually closed), I'm just paying off a balance. I want to track my debt payments and the balance owed. I don't understand why a schedule bill would show up in the budget, but not show up in the budget reports. | I'm not spending using the CC. It is just a balance I am paying off. I want payments made to that account to show up on my budget either as debt payment or payment to XXXX. I realize I can just delete the account and have it as a payment, but I want to track the balance owed also. And when I run reports I want it to show up as the same. I made sure the CC account is not a budget account. I guess I'm asking is there a way to not use Transfer and track a balance on a loan or CC? | Transfers don't count in budgets. What you should be budgeting for is the CC spending. -- Regards Bob Peel, Microsoft MVP - Money For UK tips & fixes see http://support.microsoft.com/default...d=fh;EN-GB;mny. | I have setup a credit card account and I want to track my balance, so I setup a transfer from checking to the CC account. It shows up in my budget under Transfers, but on all the budget reports (like Spending By Category or Weekly Spending), it doesn't show up. It seems like I have tried every different way to setup my accounts so I can budget payments and track the balance, but there's always one thing that doesn't work correctly. Can someone explain the "right" way to set up a basic checking and debt account so I can budget things and track the balance? And, no, I don't want to use the Debt Reduction Planner. It doesn't allow me to control what payment gets applied to which debt. Thanks. |
