You get that error on the Money 2000 file that you copied from the
*.mn8.

To recap, if you restore the Money 2000 *.mbf file to Money 2000, it
works. If you restore the Money 2000 *.mbf file to Money 2005, the
restore does not work.

I guess I would open the file with Money 2000, and consider QIF
export/import. You will lose some info, but your file will be clean.

If you want to do the QIF export/import, I would follow the steps
in http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;178830
except in the first step 4, I would suggest this: start the name of
the QIF file for the investment accounts with an underscore (_),
and start the name of QIF files for the cash accounts associated
with the investments with a letter. Thus you might have
_BrownInvestment.qif and BrownInvestmentCash.qif. This would cause
the investment account to be processed prior to the associated cash
account. When the BrownInvestment got created, you would specify
that you want to track the cash transactions. Then specify that
the cash transactions account for BrownInvestment was where the
BrownInvestmentCash.qif transactions get sent.

Then File-> Import ALL AT ONCE using Ctrl+<click> to select files.
Specify "New or Recovered" account when asked.

Of course you will use a different filename for the new file, and
you will have both versions to choose from when done. I would also
set up the backups to make sure they are using different names.

Much appreciated for the reply. I tried salv.exe from both Money 2005 and
2000. Neither was able to repair the file in standard mode (still getting
the "Database error" message during repair). Although no error was reported
in quick repair mode, the file still causes Money 2005 to crash during
conversion. Any idea?

I infer then, that you had only one backup file, and assume you
intend to have more than one in the future.

Which salvage tool are you using?

Try using
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money 2005\MNYCoreFiles\salv.exe on a
copy of your Money 2000 file to see if it can make a repaired
version. Then try converting that repaired file.

Money 05 still crashes while retoring the backup file (mbf file of my Money
2000 mny file). 2005 failed during the conversion, process. I am curious
about why the file can be opened with Money 2000 without problem but the
newer version failed to process it. The salvage tool reported "Invalid
Database", so there must be something wrong with the original file?

Restore a backup.

To locate your available backups, search your computer for *.mbf .

Thank you for the reply. I forgot to mention that mine is the Small
Business version. The version number that comes with the disk is
14.0.150.805. So I guess 150 means Small Business? I tried the procedures
you suggested with that version as well as the updated 14.0.150.1105 version
but still having the same error. Any idea? Thanks!

1. I suggest you create a NEW empty file (named perhaps
Temp.mny)with no Passport (click Decline) or password. Let Money
update. Exit and restart Money. Ensure you have version
14.0.125.1105 when you do Help-> About.

2. Find your *.mn8 and copy it to David05.mny. Then in Money 2005,
File-> Open the David05.mny file.

Default Upgrade failed

I have been using Money 2000 for more than four years and decided to upgrade
to Money 2005. However, Money 2005 crashed when trying to convert the old
file. I tried using the salvage tool. In quick repair mode it reported no
error, while in standard mode an "Invalid Database" error was reported early
in the scan. What should I do now? Is there anyway that old file can be
repaired and be converted by the version? Thanks in advance.
