| Class1 and Class2 are as-yet-undefined classifications. Classifications are like categorization and Money can have two of them. This creates three "vectors" for each transaction element. (Category, Class1 defined as something and Class 2 defined as something.) Very few people use more than one classification. Examples of how I use my Class1, named Class: I have top level classes like Vacation, Flying, Automobile, Cell Phone, Computer, and Property. Automobile:Gasoline expenses for the CR-V are classified Automobile:CR-V as are Insurance:Automobile expenses for it. My Vacation:Airfare expenses may be classified as Vacation:Boston 2001. Utilities:Wireless Phone for one of my phones are classified Cell Phone 808)555-1212.Adding a new CD drive to my current desktop would be category Computer:Hardware classified as Computer esktop IV.Going out to get current might be Leisure:Flying but classification Flying:Rental Hours. If I maintained a rental property, it might be Housing:Maintenance but classification Property:123 Pigeon Lane. You can do most everything in terms of reporting with Classifications that you can with Categories. The limitations: you can't fid/replace them. You can't get them out in MoneyLink. That's a quick intro. Try searching help for keyword classification for more. | I just used Microsoft Chat support tonight trying to find out if Money has the capability to use "Classes", after I couldn't find it in help or Quicken conversions. I used it several years ago when I used Quicken, and found "classes" to be a very useful tool, especially for managing real estate properties. I now find another application where "Class1, etc" would be very helpful, but can't find that capability in Money2006 Premium. Chat told me Money did not have that feature, but this Discussion Group gives me hope that I can use it. Can you please him how to find it, or how to initiate it. Thanks, -- Ben "Glyn Simpson, MVP" wrote: - quote - > They are probably classifications. You can, for example, use them to track > multiple items which use the same category. | As a real-world example, I use mine only for work-related expenses for which I get reimbursed. I post all those expenditures as transfers to a "Job - reimbursed expenses" account. I use the classification to record what event they were associated with. I can report selectively on the transfers into the account only by use of the classification. (There probably are other ways, but this is easy.) When I get reimbursed I deposit the check as a transfer out of the reimbursement account, same classification. When I report on the entire event, the total should be zero if I've been fully reimbursed. -- Chris Cowles Gainesville, FL "Dick Watson" <littlegreengecko[at]mind-enufalready-spring.com> wrote in message news:eoyiwBHEFHA.3780[at]TK2MSFTNGP09.phx.gbl... - quote - > I probably put classification in 30% of my transactions. | You can collect the data you want for as long as the feature exists--or stay indefinitely on the last version you can stomach where it does exist. For me, that version may prove to be M04. Classification still exists in M04, you can infer what I think of M05. Given that it's in M05, I'd bet it's good through M07. After that, at present rate/direction, prospects may not be so good. I probably put classification in 30% of my transactions. It's blank in the rest. Glad we could help. | Thank both of you! I think those classes can be usefull if you would like some detailed information about some transactions. But I don't know if I will make use of them because the long term perspectives sounds rather negative. It think it's not a good idea to put effort in something that could be removed on the long run. Just my 2cents. Thanks. J. |

| class1 and class2 only exist if you tell them to exist. (IIRC, some QIF imports, or was it Quicken conversions, create them whether necessary for the underlying dataset or not.) class1 and class2 are default names for the two vectors of transaction classification supported in Money. (Think of Category:Subcategory as a third, pre-defined, vector.) Classification is useful if you want another way or two to characterize transactions besides just category:subcategory. The best way to explain that is, as you've suspected, some real world examples. I call class1 Class. In Class, I've defined Classes and Subclasses like: Automobile:SLK230, :CR-V, :TL, etc Property:123 Rich Republican Ln, etc Vacation:Hawaii 2004, etc Computer esktop IV, etcCell Phone 808)555-1212, etcWith these I can define transactions like: $24.50 Automobile:Gas, class Automobile:SLK230 $68.95 Taxes:Ad Valoerm Vehicle, class Automobile:TL $123.45 Furnishings:Maintenance, class Property:123 Rich Republican Ln $11.95 Leisure:Photos, class Vacation:Hawaii 2004 $11.20 Utilities:Long Distance, class Cell Phone 808)555-1212$687.50 Computer:Hardware, class Computer esktop IVBecause you can report by classification, you can, say, generate a report of all expenses related to the SLK230 or Desktop IV or a specific vacation. Other people use it for job costing kinds of activities. They would also be, I'm guessing, extremely useful if you had income properties. Why two separate vectors? I've never figured a good use for the second vector, but some have reported using it for tax data collection and similar things. Whether or not they are really useful depends upon your needs. One concern: because Most Users Prefer(tm) a way dumbed-down Money--or so we are told by the people doing the dumbing-down--I will not be surprised to see these go away in the future. Even GnuCash doesn't support classification--though it's on their incredibly lengthy To Do list just waiting for a volunteer to dive in. | They are probably classifications. You can, for example, use them to track multiple items which use the same category. So you could track individual transactions relating to family members, or countries where the expenditure is made or properties, for example. -- Glyn Simpson, Microsoft MVP - Money http://money.mvps.org Check http://support.microsoft.com/default...d=fh;EN-GB;mny or http://money.mvps.org/faq for UK tips and fixes for MS Money.
