| But if the floppy is NOT already full, it happily replaces the existing backup without saying squat. I don't think it was intentional. | I can only surmise it was an attempt by MS to make users think "Ooops I don't really want to overwrite my last (and only) backup!". There have been many posts in the past where users are in trouble with a corrupt file and a single back up, which is also corrupt. -- Regards Bob Peel, Microsoft MVP - Money For UK tips & fixes see http://support.microsoft.com/default...d=fh;EN-GB;mny. I have the SaveIn drop-down box for the latter pointing to a USB drive. That drive should be more than large enough to hold two copies of the backup, since Money does not delete the older version until the replacement has been written. I am set to every 7 days, and every 7 days, Money will ask about backing up to the removable drive. The PromptMe... seems to affect both the Hard and Floppy sections. My practice is to not back up to both Hard and Floppy sections on the same exit, so that I won't save the same thing at the same time. If I have not done much in the way of changing, I often, while exiting, choose to back up to neither. If I don't take the invitation to backup to the removable drive, Money will ask next time out until I accept an invitation. Then it waits 7 days before asking again. I leave one of my USB flash drives plugged in all the time. - quote - > OR are you referring to the link

| Cal, Your response is something I've been looking for. I've got a new Dell PC which has no floppy. When the box pops up to ask me to backup to floppy, it doesn't even give me the option to browse for another location to save it, such as a usb drive. Is that what you are recommending, instead of the floppy, choose a usb instead each time? OR are you referring to the link you provided, and having Money back up the file, and then allowing windows to "move" the file to the usb drive. They are also generally more reliable than floppies. Treat that as the "floppy". If you had two and alternated, you would have even greater reliability. In Tools-> Options-> Backup [M05: Tools-> Settings-> BackupOptions] I suggest checking x Automatically backup to hard disk on exit x Prompt me before backing up each time* x Make my file small ... Then periodically, perhaps once per month or more, copy your latest backup (named differently from your earlier backups) to a CDR. With XP, this can be a copy and paste operation. Otherwise use the burning software that came with your CDR drive. I strongly suggest use of a USB Flash drive, in addition to backing up to your hard drive. They typically act like a big floppy. For a more automated way to make multiple backups, see Glyn Simpson's method at http://money.mvps.org/backup.aspx * This has two advantages. You can change the file name occasionally. I like to pick a name something like money050111. Then it is easy to change the name to have multiple backups. The ..mbf extension is automatic. The other advantage is that you can choose "Don't Back Up, or you change your mind about exiting by simply clicking the X in the upper right of the pop-up box. |

| In former versions of Money, when I backed up to a floppy disk, the old backup file would be automatically overwritten by the new backup file. Now, with the 2005 version, Money tells me my floppy has no room for backup, requiring me to erase my floppies every time before I backup. A minor inconvenience to be sure, but any ideas to simplify would be appreciated. Thanks. |
