There are a lot of variables in this. How many categories/subcategories are
in use? How many have conflicts in the subcategory namespace (Supplies as in
Miscellaneous:Supplies and Computer:Supplies, for instance)? How good are

And it depends on what you are used to. It would take me a long time to
train myself fo[tab]gr[tab] to replace gr[tab]. You will probably have the
same effect in reverse.

Until this discussion emerged, I never knew (and I wasn't alone) that you
could get Food:Groceries autocompleted in single list using just gr. So, an
awful lot of this comes down to what you are deeply used to. In my case,
I've been entering dual category for twelve years. Single category was
really hard for the eight weeks or so I tried using it. Eventually I would
get there. But why?

What dual category allows is entry of category and subcategory by typing a
minimum amount of characters before autocomplete disambiguates the entry in
its respective namespace. Quantitative analysis of this effect in the case
of my data is captured in an earlier thread. On a transaction weighted
basis, the benefit easily exceeds 2 characters per transaction.

The other issue is that it's a pattern of use that is deeply ingrained.
Kinda like downloading transactions. It's what works for us.

In my travels to remove M2005 back to M2002 earlier I found that the
"Backupname.M10" will not open the M2002. It goes to a password need when
there is none. You do use that "Backupname.M10" as part of the reinstallation
of M2002.
You may wish to read the instructions as provided by Microsoft to remove
M2005 to M2002. I will post this here and at my original help post on this
subject. It worked fine for me in getting my favorite M2002. Here it is:

First, let's copy the .M10 file to a safe folder such as
"My Document". Though removing Money 2005 will not affect the data file
s, we still need to ensure the file is stored safely since it is the only
file that Money 2002 can read. To doing so, please follow the steps below:

Step 1: Save the .M10 file

1. Please locate the .M10 file. If you cannot find it, please perform a
search for it.

2. Right-click the file and click "Copy".

3. Please go to "My Document", click "Edit" on the menu and click "Paste".

After we copy the Money 2002 file to "My Document", let's remove Money 2005
by performing the following steps:

Step 2: Remove Money 2005

1. Please click "Start" and click "Control Panel".

2. Double-click "Add or Remove Programs".

3. The "Add or Remove Programs" window will show. Please scroll down the list
to find "Microsoft Money 2005". Then, please high-light it.

4. Click the "Change/Remove" button.

5. Click "Yes" to confirm the operation.

Please wait for the un-installation completed. Then, please insert the Money
2002 CD and install it. By default, there is no special setting we need to
adjust. The installer will help us to do the rest.

After Money 2002 is installed completely, please go to "My Document" and
rename the .M10 file to .MNY. Double-click the file, Money 2002 will be
launched and the file should be read correctly.

To be even more pedantic - it is not a backup file in the sense that a .mbf
file is, it is a copy of the .mny file as it was at the time you installed
M2005.

Single category is now semi-solvable. See

things about M05 that are distasteful.
