| Glad I could help. Thanks for the feedback. It's sad that Help frequently doesn't. It's great at task oriented stuff if you already know what you want to do. At general concepts, most on-line helps are lousy and Money's is no exception. | I just wish the Money program had explained the Expense, Income and Special concept in the help menu (at least not that I found) as you have so clearly explained. It would have resolved my concern immediately. Thanks so much for your help. | There are three basic kinds of Categories in Money: Expense, Income, and Special. Expense and Income include categories that are, well, expenses and income. Special includes Transfer and Loan Payment. Transfer is just that--it's net worth neutral, A Loan Payment is just a fancy compound of a computed expense item assigned to the category you specified for interest for the loan and a Transfer component that reduces the liability (or asset) amount on the loan. Glad you've sorted this out. Thanks for the feedback. | Yes, I have previously found and processed a transfer in Money via the category method you suggested. The category usage normally suggests an expense item in Quicken, where transfers are accomplished directly between accounts. That is why I questioned whether there was another method for this in Money. The lack of a TRANSFER shortcut in the side or top pane of an account register screen was questionable. Thanks for responding to this issue. | Indeed, there are differences in how tasks are accomplished between Money and Quicken. Have you actually TRIED to enter a TRANSFER transaction in Money? Not every possible case of use for an account register is listed in the left pane, whichever left pane it is that you are referring to. Start a transaction like any other. Enter a date; enter an amount; for the category, select TRANSFER; for the subcategory, select the target account name of the transfer; click Enter (or Done or whatever). It's that simple. | I should have made this more clear to you. Actually, I just open an existing account (like checking) and want to make a transfer to savings. After opening the checking account I look at the left pane and find there is no option displayed to just transfer money between accounts. Also, I am not using Transaction Forms and have so far preferred to enter transactions directly into the account register. Also, I have previously been a Quicken user for years and find distinct differences in how some Money tasks are performed. "Transfer" IS the category.- quote - > It would seem much simpler to just allow a transfer between 2 accounts > directly. However, there does not appear to be a task in the left pain to > accomplish that when opening an account. |

| Oh, and if you are entering transactions and talking about the left pulldown, try typing "Transfer" in the category box. For reasons unknown, sometimes the pulldowns excludes really important--and perfectly legal--choices. | I don't understand your question because your premise is correct and is how Money works. Are you using Transaction Forms or scheduling a future transaction? If the former, isn't there a Transfer tab? If the latter, note that Transfer is a type of item to schedule and so is Bill and a Bill won't Transfer. Where are you looking at "task[s] in the left pane"?? When you say "opening an account" do you mean setting up a new account in Money? Are we talking an Investment Account here? | Why does money require a "category" for transfering money between accounts? It would seem much simpler to just allow a transfer between 2 accounts directly. However, there does not appear to be a task in the left pain to accomplish that when opening an account. |
